On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger delivered an order to finally enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing 250,000 enslaved Black Texans. And it was 22 years after Juneteenth, on Aug. 15, 1887, that former slaves founded Eatonville – "the Town the Freedom Built.” Today, I’m excited to join Eatonville Mayor Ruthi Critton to celebrate that freedom and to continue the fight for true justice and equality for all. Post Falls’ mayor dismissed Juneteenth as “something that nobody had heard of until five years ago,” and in a 4-2 vote the City Council removed it as a city holiday while restoring Columbus Day. Juneteenth has been celebrated for generations since 1866. A narrow viewpoint doesn’t change the deep history of Juneteenth celebrations. We never needed permission to honor freedom, and we won't ask for it now.

Juneteenth commemorates not the day that Black people won freedom in this country, but the day Black people finally received word of that freedom, more than two years after Emancipation. While we celebrate freedom on Juneteenth fully and unabashedly, we are also reminded that the powerful will try to rob us of our freedoms if left to their own devices. But the power of the people is absolute— as long as we continue to exercise it, and guard against the forces that seek to divide us. Thank you to National Action Network and Reverend Al Sharpton for allowing me to share my thoughts with the congregation on this sacred day.
