This is how you get Kaikai to drink water (well, sort of). She arrived at Kaluku in May 2025 at one week old – a newborn rescued from Mara North Conservancy. Keeper Joseph has been with her since the beginning and knows that if you want to take her in a direction she isn't enthusiastic about, she will do an about-turn and lead everyone elsewhere. So, what to do on a hot day when everyone needs to stay hydrated? You don't ask Kaikai to drink water. You race her to it – then she thinks it's her idea! Today is Aoba's birthday! On the outside she's timid and short on words, but inside she's quietly carrying a mountain of complaints about the world. Slipping sharp little remarks out under her breath has somehow become a hobby of hers. Tell her something's broken and she'll take it on herself, first giving it a solid whack and only then patiently taking it apart if that doesn't work. She insists it's easier to expect nothing, since hoping only ever leads to disappointment, but the truth is no one longs more than she does for someone to treat her with warmth. So the moment Sensei shows her a little kindness she wants to lean in, and just as quickly she steps back, sure that she doesn't deserve it. If someone who once wouldn't have minded if tomorrow never came is now starting to look forward to the next day, that is surely thanks to Sensei. So today, let Sensei be the one to come find her first, so that instead of another meal eaten alone, she can share a warm one with you. #BlueArchive

Rescued in June, Kipekee lost her mother to human-wildlife conflict. She arrived at our Nursery in very poor condition, and it has taken round-the-clock care to nurse her back to health. Along the way, she has picked up a number of bodyguards - older orphans who have made it their mission to make sure this plucky little girl always has a chaperone. A model who worked at the same prestigious Milan agency as Melania Trump (Riccardo Gay) during the exact same years has literally no memory of her. In an interview she said: “I never noticed her. Honestly, I don’t remember ever meeting her. I have no idea if she actually worked that much… She was with the agency for about a year and a half. And then? What did she do? Where did she go?” Melania arrived in Milan in the early ’90s after a small, almost forgotten beauty contest in Cinecittà. Yet one of her contemporaries at a top-tier agency, who was there at the same time, says she has no recollection of her. It’s one of the strangest details about her early career. Akina: 1, Kilulu: 0! While Akina was enjoying her milk, roguish Kilulu was hatching a plan to steal it. When a more direct burglary proved ineffective, he lingered behind her and then firmly bit her tail. Unfortunately for him, Akina was completely nonplussed. She held the bottle firmly, finished her milk, and then proceeded to enjoy her mud spa session. She knows how to handle pesky bulls! Like Kilulu, Akina was rescued during the drought. Upon her arrival at our Nairobi Nursery, a further twist in Kerrio’s story revealed itself: We discovered that her hind legs were all but paralysed, rendering her nearly immobile. But as we have seen time & again, miracles can happen. With time and loving care, Kerrio slowly regained full mobility. More recently, she has emerged as one of the Nursery herd’s mini matriarchs. Freen’s mom: what impressed me the most is that since high school, Freen has always been determined to take care of herself. She worked to support her own education and earn enough to continue studying at a higher level She learned how to save money and how to earn an income from a young age. During university, she supported herself financially. Whatever work she could do, she did it. Most of it was in the entertainment industry from beauty pageants, including Miss Teen Thailand, onward. She worked, studied, and earned money at the same time, all while taking care of herself.That’s what makes me so proud of her.Sometimes I think that if one day I’m no longer here, I won’t have to worry about her, because I know she can take care of herself.what makes me proudest of all is that she managed to balance work and school, and everything she achieved came through her own effort. Then Kipekee and Daba arrived, smaller and newer, and her role shifted. She has grown into it beautifully, although she still makes sure she is the centre of attention somehow. Case in point: she has worked out if she lies on her side, the younger orphans will clamber on her belly and even her face. Perhaps she'll be a mini-matriach like Kerrio in the making? Lamuu is unrecognisable from the calf we rescued and milk only tells part of the story. We rescued her on 4 January 2026 from the northern coast of Kenya. She was around 17 months old, alone, with a snare wound around her front left leg that had sliced through an artery. The snare had been working as a tourniquet – KWS Vet Dr Lawi performed emergency surgery in the field just to keep her alive. Five months on, at our Kaluku Neonate Unit, the ring wound around her leg has healed thanks to daily wound care. She's put on weight thanks to three-hourly feeds and she's bonded closely with her Keepers, following her Keeper Lekoli everywhere – his shadow, our team calls her. Her best friend Subi is alongside her every day and she spends her day among our orphan-human herd. Lamuu has years of care ahead before she is ready to return to the wild. Sulwe is developing a new skill: stick balancing. It's an impressive effort, but we think she needs a little more practice. Fortunately, one fallen stick doesn't perturb this little imp, shuffling around and switching to 'trunk mode' to tackle a small shrub instead! Sulwe is now one of four elephants born to orphans rescued, raised, and now living in the Kibwezi Forest.
