He doesn’t even know who was on the other side of that line. Before he could even finish grieving his wife, his retirement was gone. All of it—$1 MILLION!😳 And as unbelievable as Larry’s story sounds, he’s just one example of an epidemic that’s costing Americans billions. In 2025 alone, people over 60 reported losing $2.76 BILLION to cryptocurrency investment fraud, according to the FBI. These scams don’t usually start with someone asking for money. They start with a “wrong number.” A friendly conversation. Someone attractive who takes an unusual interest in your life. Days turn into weeks. Trust is built. Sometimes romance follows. Only after that relationship feels real does the “investment opportunity” appear. And they’re very good at it. In one FBI initiative that identified people caught in cryptocurrency investment scams, 77% of the victims didn’t even realize they were being scammed when the FBI contacted them. So guys, especially older men: if a beautiful woman decades younger than you randomly appears in your messages and seems too good to be true, she probably is. But before we laugh at the people who fall for it, remember something else: Grief screws with your judgment. So does loneliness. These scammers know that. They’re not simply searching for stupid or gullible people. They’re searching for someone who’s lonely, recently divorced, grieving a spouse, or simply happy that somebody seems interested in them. Then they spend weeks or months becoming exactly who that person needs. By the time they ask for money, the scam has already happened. This is just one man’s story. There are thousands more we’ll never hear about.
