The FA Cup Finals of the 1970s The 1970s was a wonderful time for the FA Cup Finals on TV, whether you watched BBC Grandstand or ITVs World Of Sport. Entertainment galore from early on a Saturday morning till around 5:15pm. It was a day you looked forward to for weeks, cameras in the team hotel, cameras on the team bus, It’s a Cup Final Knockout and Abide with me, the list goes on. Sadly those days have gone and the once great cup competition that was envied around the world has been devalued so much it’s criminal. But we still have our memories of when the FA Cup meant something! #FACup

On This Day 1972 #FACup The great David Coleman commentating on his first FA Cup Final on Cup Final Grandstand, his distinguished voice and the great Clarke…One Nil! If only commentators were like this today, after the goal is scored….Silence! The pictures and crowd noise tell the story, not endless waffle like today’s rabble. Back in the 1970s and 80s, we were spoilt with great commentators on both BBC & ITV. If only today’s crop would learn to shut up now and again, the game might be worth watching!

So it’s the start of the Champions League tomorrow. Back in the day we had a proper European competition. We called it the European Cup, and you had to win your domestic league season to qualify for it. A proper European knockout competition that you could watch on the BBC with Sportsnight, and on ITV with the Midweek Match then Midweek Sport Special. The good old days of European Football!

Kevin Keegan had seen and done pretty much everything in football by April 1981. England international, European footballer of the year, League Titles, FA Cup winner, European Cup winner etc. Then he went on BBC Blue Peter and was given a wonderful Kevin Keegan doll (bit scary) and also give football tips to Simon Groom and Peter Duncan, and if that wasn’t enough for King Kev, he was asked to come up with a name for one of the puppies.
