![๐จ Mamdaniโs โCommunity Safetyโ Pick Wants to Turn NYPD Gang List Into an Anti-NYPD Voting Bloc In an older interview, Zohran Mamdaniโs new Community Safety transition pick Dana Rachlin starts from the premise that โwe continue to elect what is called quote unquote progressive candidates, but very little seems to change,โ and zeroes in on the NYPD gang database created under Bloomberg and Ray Kelly, where โthey were nefariously adding black and brown, predominantly young menโs names into this database, and this database has grown exponentially over the years.โ Rachlinโs answer to that list is to build organized political muscle out of it. โSo what we did was we said, โOK, how do we target those people to make them part of the civic engagement process?โ So we are hiring young people who live on what we call impacted blocksโฆ Weโre hiring those young people, weโre doing intense civic education.โ That explicitly includes elections: โ[T]he idea is to register the block to vote.โ Then the punch line. โSo thereโs 40,000 names on the gang database. Thereโs only 36,000 members of service in the NYPDโฆ So thatโs more votesโฆ at the end of the day, the voting block is much bigger on the other side than it is on that sideโฆโ Iโm never going to be mad about getting people involved politically. But selling kids on the idea that the answer is blowing up the gang database is a lie that will only make their own blocks less safe. NYPD has already overhauled its criteria and shrunk the list dramatically; it has reportedly dropped by roughly 40 percent from its peak.
