NEWS: Tesla is officially testing FSD in The Boring Company's Vegas Loop tunnel system. “We’ve started to test,” Steve Hill, CEO of the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority. No passengers have been in vehicles during the testing. In the future, the Boring Company will remove safety drivers from the front seat during testing, Hill said, but there is no telling when that will take place, as it will depend on when Tesla and the Boring Company can demonstrate to the LVCVA that it is safe to do so. Hill said that the vehicles are currently being tested in self-driving mode inside the tunnels, “experiencing the environment,” as “they find spots that are difficult for them.” The rock walls of the tunnels, Hill said, combined with the bright, colorful lights in the passageways create some “interesting but odd lighting” for Tesla’s self-driving system. This week, Boring Co. began picking up airport passengers after 100 of its 130-car fleet of Teslas were outfitted with transponders the airport requires of transportation companies. • Phase 2: A new 2.2-mile dual-direction tunnel from Westgate toward Paradise Road is under construction. Initially, vehicles will exit the tunnel and complete the final airport leg above ground. This will remove 2 miles of above-ground travel needed now. Boring Co. President Steve Davis expects this portion to be in operation in the next couple of months. • Phase 3: The tunnel extends closer to Terminal 1. The Cybercab is aiming to produce 2 million units per year. Let this sink in. Today, Tesla produces about ~1.7 million vehicles per year total, across its entire lineup. And now Tesla is preparing to outproduce that with one single vehicle, a fully autonomous one. This is Elon and Tesla going ALL-IN on autonomy. Production is scheduled to start April 2026 at Giga Texas, with volume ramping throughout the year. And as of early 2026, Cybercab prototypes are already being tested around the U.S. The Tesla Cybercab is built from the ground up for unsupervised autonomy. There is no steering wheel and no pedals, just cameras, AI, and Tesla’s custom inference computers. No lidar and radar like other companies, just pure vision and software. Elon put it best on the Q3 2024 earnings call: “It’s not just a revolutionary vehicle design, but a revolution in vehicle manufacturing that is also coming with the Cybercab.” That quote matters a lot bc that means the entire way a vehicle is manufactured is changing with the Cybercab. Tesla is designing what Elon calls “the machine that builds the machine.” The Cybercab uses Tesla’s unboxed manufacturing process, where major sections are built in parallel instead of one long assembly line. After all, they’re giving out over 100,000 paid robotaxi rides a week across cities like San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles with a fleet of 700 vehicles, and on the surface, it could seem like they’re dominating. However, each Waymo costs $100,000 due to the complex, expensive hardware that’s in use. And due to this, they’re losing money on every single ride. For Waymo, scaling this business up means higher costs, and I don’t think it’s a sustainable model, even if the company keeps pouring $ into it. Now, look at Tesla. With a fleet closing in on 7 million vehicles worldwide, Tesla is playing a different game. Instead of relying on bulky, expensive hardware, Tesla uses a much simpler, more cost-effective approach, just 8 or 9 cameras and a powerful AI neural net. This AI, constantly learning from millions of real-world miles, means Tesla’s software gets smarter every day and can be scaled across the globe without needing new hardware for every car. So, while Waymo might seem like it’s leading the charge today, in my eyes, Tesla is quietly preparing to take over the entire field. They’ve created the foundation for something far bigger and is why I believe the true leader in Robotaxis will be Tesla, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it unfold on 10/10!

And this data is quickly becoming one of the most valuable revenue streams in the industry. Companies like Tesla, with their autonomous, sensor-rich fleets, are positioned to benefit enormously, but the same applies to many newer connected vehicles across all brands. What makes this so powerful is how diverse the use cases are. Cities, for example, can tap into aggregated vehicle data to understand exactly where they need to intervene. If thousands of cars detect the same irregular bump on the road, you instantly know there is a pothole at a precise location. Scale that across a whole city and you have a live map of infrastructure issues before residents even complain.
