The Trump administration is pushing ahead with the purchase of warehouses it plans to convert into immigration detention centers in what could be the largest expansion in U.S. history. One of these warehouses includes an 800k square foot building in Washington County, Maryland. DHS reportedly purchased the warehouse for more than $100M, and it could hold up to 1500 detainees. The Washington County Commissioners have offered their full support for the project and DHS efforts. Maryland Governor Wes Moore has pushed back on the warehouse plan stating, “The community has deep fears this will be used as a detention center where inhumanity and cruelty has been commonplace, where basic human needs and dignity are denied." Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says DHS no longer needs the facility. The New York Times claims DHS is offloading 7 of the 11 facilities it recently purchased to house illegal aliens. While DHS did not deny this report to me, they claim the agency is focused on going after criminal illegal aliens.
