Japan was once seen as the global leader, especially with Honda’s ASIMO and SoftBank Robotics’ humanoid projects. However, ASIMO was retired, and much of Japan’s robotics focus shifted toward industrial automation and service robots rather than full-scale general-purpose humanoids. Europe, meanwhile, remains strong in industrial robotics, research, and precision engineering — with players like ABB and KUKA — but hasn’t pushed aggressively into commercial humanoid platforms at the same scale or speed as the U.S. and China. In short, it’s less that Europe and Japan disappeared, and more that the center of gravity in humanoid robotics — especially AI-driven, general-purpose humanoids — has shifted toward U.S.–China competition. Whether that gap widens or narrows will depend on breakthroughs in embodied AI, cost reduction, and real-world deployment over the next few years.

Farewell to International Space Station! This is truly a special place, special mission, and special team that makes it happen. It is a bittersweet departure today – I have a keen awareness that I may never be back here, and even if I was, it would be at a different time with a different crew. This chapter is over. But as I complete this second mission living and working in space, what draws me to this job is the people. Experiences like this are amazing, but the relationships we build that make it possible are the “why.” Every day, this mission depends on people from all over the world, of different nationalities, races, religions, and cultures. It depends on government and commercial entities, it depends on all political parties, and it depends on commitment to an unchanged goal over many years and decades. It depends on people dedicated to being part of something bigger than themselves, whose names may never be known but who wake up every day to make the world a better place and to be part of something they will be proud to tell their grandkids about. History will look kindly upon them. Humans have always had a propensity to explore … across lands and oceans, up mountains, and into the sky. We as a species will never stop wondering what else is out there, and what it would be like to go. But then, in the words of TS Elliot, “…at the end of all our exploring, will be to arrive where we started, and know the place for the first time.” Crew-10 is on its way home.

They're controlling a real physical machine in real time, trying to win real physical prizes. And if they win, the prize either gets mailed to them or converted into a digital form and emailed to them instantly. You will not believe how many plays this thing got in one night. People are obsessed with this because it takes the satisfaction of a claw machine, the nostalgia, the challenge, the thrill of winning something, and it makes it accessible from anywhere at any time. You don't have to be at an arcade. You don't have to be at a mall. You can be sitting on your couch at midnight and decide you want to try to win a toy or a gift card or whatever's loaded in the machine. And this is interesting because you only need to own one physical machine, but you can have thousands of people playing it all over the world. And if multiple people want to play at the same time, then you can charge extra. If you have a fixed supply and high demand, your price goes up. The prizes can be anything, toys, electronics, gift cards, merch, whatever. People can share with their friends. They play over and over. It becomes content. It becomes competition. People stream themselves trying to win. And my mind is exploding with possibilities because it's not just a vending machine business. It's an entertainment business, it's e-commerce, it's gamification, it's live streaming, all wrapped into one. And someone just figured out how to make it work with a claw machine. 10,000 plays. That's how many plays this guy got overnight on his virtual claw machine business. You could do this with anything.

I miss building simple, working software. At some point, we decided to complicate everything for no reason. Today, people can't build anything without using three frameworks, 17 libraries, and a swarm of microservices. And here is a funny paradox: To understand how these complex systems work, we've had to build systems and tools that generate data we can later analyze. But the more data we produce, the harder it is to process and make sense of it. We are in the middle of an observability crisis. The tools we have are inefficient, and we don't have enough people to keep systems running. A few weeks ago, I met the team Resolve AI, and they have built a fundamentally new approach to observability and incident management: Instead of depending on humans to run a system, Resolve built a Production Software Engineer who runs the system using AI while letting people supervise. And it's not only crazy, but I think this will fundamentally change how we monitor and maintain systems in production for years to come. I recorded a quick video to showcase a simple example of how Resolve works behind the scenes. There are two main things I'd like you to notice: 1. The tool can correlate data across logs, metrics, and traces coming from different systems. You don't have to do any work to get the information that matters right in front of you. 2. (This is the big one!) The tool can diagnose what's happening and give you instructions on how to solve it. It can produce causal relationships across the entire system stack. I know a setup like this for many people would look cool and convenient but hear me out. I would only utilize something like this while parked in a camping area with other people. I would not use this by myself in the middle of the woods like this. I don’t feel they are safe and I’ll explain why. First off and most importantly, I don’t see a safe way to secure it. It’s all thin plastic sheeting meant to be waterproof but can be easily cut to gain access. If anyone wanted to cause harm or rob you, all they have to do is cut through the sheeting and they would have access to everything. It wouldn’t be hard to break into this. Then I look at how long it takes to setup, while it shows one person can set this up by themselves. Look at how long it takes to do this, it’s very impractical. I feel something like this that’s an add on to a vehicle should be much easier, like pushing a button and everything is pops out by itself. In an emergency I couldn’t imagine trying to fold things back in the right way while trying to escape. Could you imagine trying to outrun a bear in this only for it to be ripped off by tree branches cause you couldn’t fold it in time? The scenario I’m thinking of is what if I am being chased by a wild animal like a wolf or a bear. I couldn’t just hop in my Jeep and take off with this setup. Everything is folded out and tethered into the ground. It’s not like a traditional tent I could leave behind. If I was out camping with friends for a few days I think this could be ok. But doing a van life of camping for months at a time during the summer months wouldn’t be safe or practical as a solid unit like a standard RV. I wouldn’t be comfortable or safe in something like this.
