Just over a year ago I started experimenting with pulling raw pen data off my reMarkable tablet. It stores every stroke as binary vector data with per-point pressure, speed, direction. Built a small pipeline to parse and clean it into JSON and a web renderer to animate doodles

Really just a proof of concept so far and there's a lot more in the data to play with, plus more interesting output to pursue. Getting back to this now though so hoping to share more soon...

Did it require a custom firmware? Is the capture tool available?

You can ssh into the reMarkable and pull down the .rm notebook files / reverse engineer the format (check out rmscene for a python implementation for the v6 format). I've got a custom parser and workflow which I can clean up and open source as I get back into this project :)

That's pretty awesome! Where do you even start with something like that? Do they expose an API of some kind?

If you connect with USB, you can ssh into the device, pull the binary files (.rm) and reverse engineer that. rmscene is a great python lib as a starting point, it can give you the scene graph from the binary in a format that's easy to wrangle into whatever you need!

I have really tried to like the ReMarkable. I do suggest it to others. But, for me: The file archiving is annoying (best word). The tools for an artist are difficult. You cool hack here should be the screen saver, and it should have a market for apps. Hardware is good.
