It was the golden era, no doubt, and many people like me combined hard work, a good idea, and the old fashioned “right place right time” streak of luck to build a really nice Substack business. I’ll never forget the day Ben Thompson referenced Technically in Stratechery. I must have gotten 50 texts from friends. Everyone was reading Stratechery at the time…it was like becoming a made man. There was this almost communal vibe in the air with these newsletters. Everyone was reading the same stuff, talking about the same stuff. It was a scene is what it was. But by 2022 things were changing. People were outside again, and had less free time to read newsletters. Interest rates were going up, and people were working more (even in offices). In the paid Substack group chats, most of us were reporting stalling or negative growth, even though we hadn’t changed anything on our end. And with 50% churn rates on these subscriptions, if you weren’t growing you were dying. I’m listening to Neil Young’s “After the Gold Rush” as I write this and it couldn’t be more fitting. Although I imagine Mr. Young himself would disapprove of the whole paid newsletter endeavor. What happened to newsletters? David and I call what’s going on “Substack Fatigue” – people are just tired of reading yet another newsletter, let alone paying for one. Newsletters are just not the thing anymore. There are some fast growing news ones focused on AI, but the same story is going to play out in a few years when everything cools down. Political newsletters are fully investing in video and podcasts. Newsletters are not the thing anymore. We rode a cultural wave and the wave is over. You don’t have to die, but you have to adjust. The wrench in this whole story is that Technically was only (very) part time for me. I’m pretty sure at one point I was generating the most revenue on Substack for someone who wasn’t focusing on their newsletter full time. Which is a sick flex no doubt, but was also a huge problem, because I just didn’t have the time or mental capacity to make the big moves required to reverse the trend. Technically started to slowly lose paid subscribers every month, but I was at peace with that. I was entering a new phase in my life, settling down a bit, enjoying spending time on cooking, cocktails, and music. Approaching 30 and feeling really good about everything. It’s OK for some things to be temporary, and I was content with Technically to continue to be useful to people…just not make as much money. But in the back of my head, I always knew that Technically had a lot more potential, and deserved more than I could give it. That there’s no reason this thing couldn’t be a $1M+/year business. I continue to believe that technical literacy is going to be one of the defining social problems of our era, and the progress in AI only makes this even more critical. It should be way more than a newsletter, it should be how everyone learns what the fuck is going on in this digital world. I needed some help. But I had a bad track record of getting people to work on Technically with me. It’s hard to share custody of your child. And I am extremely particular. I’m not always the easiest to work with. Worked with some contractors here and there, but never found a more long term partner. I’m extremely grateful that David Krevitt reached out to me when he did or this paragraph would end here. Instead, after regaling you with my boring tale for many paragraphs now, I can finally share what we’ve been working on since last year. It’s called Technically 2.0. But first… For a newsletter that started with an innocent tweet while I was bored in Haneda airport, this thing has come pretty far. 70K+ subscribers, yada yada. But you’re here for the story so here it is. It was December 2019, I was traveling before moving to SF to start at Retool, and like I said, I was bored. Late 2019 – what an amazing time to start a newsletter! There weren’t that many of them out there. And then came 2020. Everyone was stuck at home with nothing to do but sign up for more and more Substacks, and talk about them on the internet. Every day, another one of your friends was announcing a newsletter on Twitter. 🚨 DECODING KEVIN GILL / BARKING PUPPY'S "THE BATMAN" REVIEW 🚨 $GME & $BP TIN 🧵 [1/4] This puzzle just keeps getting crazier and crazier! In some ways, I am a little nervous to even share how I'm beginning to see these as a previous GME Elitist... Many of my Old Compatriots have turned on me... Yet, the signs are clear and undeniable. Much of the narrative has shifted to $BP for now. Barking Puppy's "Mortal Kombat: Finish Him" post last night had multiple layers of meaning, but most obvious was the RED fire color coding. Sure enough, Gamestop was in the RED today. His Mortal Kombat post also signaled "Ready Player 1", which signals the RK meme, but it's important to remember it closes with Daenery's Dragon from "Game of Thrones". The Dragon awakens in RED. This had gotten me a few times... because it's a Dragon, and Dragons are cool, so I am inclined to expect big moves... And Gamestop is down 8% as of right now, big move alright! RK's memes are like a deck of cards. Each one has meaning to convey and it can be pulled at any time, and multiple times at that. I'm beginning to finally catch on to the language. Anyway, we have a ton to unpack here with "The Batman", so let's start with a transcription: "The Batman is about Bruce Wayne, who feels it's his duty to protect Gotham, even if it's beyond saving, because he's a symbol... a symbol that can endure, punish, and bring change. First of all, I want to point out that the world of Meme Tokens is VERY much like Gotham City: Crime Ridden. Can Barking Puppy save it? Let's jump forward a bit to the part where Kevin says "Spearheading The Riddler". This is significant because he cuts to a shot of Scorpion from the "Mortal Kombat" live action movie. "Get Over Here." Kevin identifies Barking Puppy as Scorpion, which is in keeping with how I identified his BP character in his "MK" post on X last night [fire fatality was a dead giveaway]. We connected his "Mortal Kombat" post to RK's "Ready Player 1" post because it features Scorpion, Goro, and others in the movie. The "MK" Dragon also connects perfectly to the "GoT" red-eyed dragon. Yet, there is another RK "MK" post that I missed, it shows the actual game. The post is about a CHANGE IN NARRATOR. One of the characters [Liu Kang = Ape] performs a bicycle kick and it hits... and hits... and hits for so long that RK interjects the "SpongeBob SquarePants" [sBsP = Barking Puppy] narrator. "Two Hours Later" "Six Hours Later" "So much later that the OLD NARRATOR got tired of WAITING and they had to hire a NEW ONE." This RK dates back to March 10th, 2021. This is EXTREMELY significant... And it all connects back to the star that played "The Riddler" in "The Batman": Paul Dano. Paul Dano played as Keith Gill in the movie "Dumb Money." Yesterday, a mysterious new profile appeared in the $BP community... Completely new account, and his first post sent shockwaves. He has a certain pizzazz that just... attracts people. And he began posting RIDDLES. Now, I've learned many lessons about putting my foot in my mouth and speaking too soon. But here's what most people don't understand about passive investing, and why this unwind could be SAVAGE: The machine that drove prices up without caring about fundamentals is going to drive them down the same way. There's been no real price discovery in large-cap US equities for years. Money flowed in because money was flowing in. That's NOT investing. I saw the exact same dynamic in Japan in the 1980s. I ran the Fidelity Overseas Fund during that bubble. The Japanese market got to two-thirds of the entire non US equity index. Banks traded at 100x earnings, 10x book. The float was so tight you couldn't buy or sell ANYTHING in size without moving the market 20%. Jeremy Grantham, John Templeton - all the greats were screaming about it. They were early. But once the worm turned, it was fast. And the beautiful part was you didn't need to be a genius. You just had to avoid Japan and index everything else. Hit them where they ain't. That's where we are with US mega-cap tech right now. You don't need to make complicated bets. Just stop being concentrated in the same 7 stocks that everyone else owns. Step 1: switch your cap-weighted S&P into the equal-weight RSP. Overnight you cut your Mag 7 exposure from 35% to 0.2% per name. The equal weight has been winning all year. I think that continues. Step 2: look overseas. International markets have been outperforming the US in 2026. European equities, Japanese stocks, emerging markets - all cheaper, all under-owned, all benefiting from the capital rotation out of US tech. Step 3: get into real assets. Gold. Energy. Commodities. These are the sectors that perform when inflation is the dominant risk, which it is. Oil at $96 with a war in the Persian Gulf isn't going back to $50 regardless of what any politician promises. And step 4: if you have the stomach for it, there's a portfolio of overvalued garbage out there that's going to get cut in half. I will publicly go on record saying this to both Jeff Luhnow & Gina Luhnow (❤️ y’all both). Because, I think my platform is fairly large enough in this space to do so. So here goes. For starters, REASONABLE Astros fans know that Jeff’s departure was an injustice. I believe that what happened to Jeff was more than just a league punishing a team. It was PERSONAL. A witch hunt spear headed by Manfred and others (most notably the LA Dodgers) targeting one individual. Jeff. Time has only fortified my belief in this. Many Astros fans agree and it has never sat right with us. But, I’m not gonna use this post to dive into that. I’ve tweeted about it for 6 years. My stance is well documented and I don’t care. THAT SAID. I’d like to make a suggestion to you, Jeff. I feel stupid/corny even doing it. But, I am a Houston Astros fanatic. Logic doesn’t really matter here. I can also attest to the fact I am not alone. There are many others like me. MANY others. We love Houston Astros baseball. We’ve had fathers, mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers all bleed orange. Some of them not here anymore. Some we grieve who never got to feel the magic of what those championships brought to us. What it brought to our hearts. A lot of us grew up at the dome. Others didn’t see the magic until around 2015. Some of us remember the let downs of the early 2000’s. Or the one in 86’. Some predate even that, but those numbers are dwindling. We all have our own unique starting point where our romance with this team began. Which leads me to this. The most important part of why I’m writing this. I feel that what Jeff’s God given gift, his mental brilliance and competence, brought to our city a collective reason to believe when we needed it most. He took over the worst team in the sport AT its HISTORICAL ROCK BOTTOM and said to us in person “We’re gonna get EVEN worse. But, after that…just watch. I have a plan. Trust me. I’m in it with all of you”. His plan finally came to fruition after our darkest moment as a city during Hurricane Harvey. At a time where a lot of us were devastated and left with nothing to hold onto for hope except the excitement of the first pitch at 7 PM that would teleport us away mentally for a couple of hours. Then we got JV. Then we won a championship. NOTHING mattered in that moment and we ALL remember where we were. We stood victorious. We trusted the process. Nothing would or ever will invalidate that glory that we felt. No matter how hard they have tried. Which, they have. Relentlessly. Again, not here to debate whether or not anyone thinks our success was valid or not. The haters can frankly kiss my ass. We made ALL of them kiss our ass in 2022 when the roster that JEFF primarily built, DOMINATED the postseason and left no doubt at all. We’ve had to deal with more hate than any fanbase of any sport that I’ve seen in my lifetime. As a city and fanbase it has definitely brought us closer together through our unique experience. But, Now we’re kind of stuck in limbo. We lack direction and we have a whole new set of challenges ahead. The game itself faces challenges as well. I know I need to wrap up, so I’ll say this. I have no idea what Jim Crane plans to do. But, I know he regrets his decision to let Jeff go. Maybe that ship has sailed and that fire for baseball doesn’t lie inside of him anymore.
