Can’t show an ID like everyone else? Can’t find a mailbox? Can’t press “submit”? Can’t locate the polling place despite GPS, billboards, and public service announcements? Can’t take advantage of the free rides political campaigns offer? Can’t manage early voting that lasts weeks? Can’t navigate online registration in the same type of system where they order food, pay bills, and stream Netflix? Can’t get off Twitter long enough to vote in person? Can’t possibly survive the trauma of being treated as adults capable of civic responsibility? Or is the true assumption that they shouldn’t have to — that patronizing pity now passes for equality? Because if the argument is that certain Americans are too helpless to vote without elite intervention, that’s not compassion — that’s condescension wrapped in moral theater.
