Michael Caine explains why he broke his own rule of not kissing a male during this scene with Superman [Christopher Reeve] in 'Deathtrap' (1982, Lumet): "There were two routes out of the ghetto: sport or show business. Sport was out for me, so show business was the only option, although I had very little practical experience. When I was seven I appeared in the school pantomime with my fly open and got my first on-stage laugh which was very gratifying — until I found out why they were laughing. I learned two things from this debut: always make the audience laugh with you and never at you; and always check your fly before you go on. These days it's an automatic reaction with me. My second attempt at show business was at Wilson's Grammar School where I went to the first play rehearsal without reading through my part and found out that I had to kiss a small boy who was playing my wife —a necessity in an all-boys school and one of the reasons why I am against them. I couldn't do this love scene; apart from the fact that Jenkins was not a girl he was also very ugly —even for a boy —and he had bad breath. I retired from the play. After this I promised myself I would never do anything where I had to kiss a male. I only broke this vow once, when I did 'Deathtrap' (1982) many years later. I saw Airplane when I was a senior in high school and thought it was the funniest movie I’d ever seen. My date, however, did not agree. In fact, she didn't laugh at all. Not even once. Not even when the Japanese soldier stabbed himself to death in the window seat, rather than listen to Ted Striker drone on and on about his broken heart. When the credits rolled, she looked at me like I was an alien. “What’s the matter with you?” she asked. “How was any of that funny?” In her defense, there were others in the theater who didn’t get it, several of whom left early. But there were many others like me who not only laughed themselves sick but stayed to watch it again. So, my date left me in the theater and spent the next two hours shopping in the mall, while I laughed even harder the second time around. “Tell me Johnny, have you ever seen a grown man naked?” "Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue!” "Pardon me Stewardess, I speak Jive." And this gem, perhaps the greatest exchange in the history of cinema, between two very sophisticated ten-year old Caucasians dressed like adults. Boy: Coffee? Girl: Yes, please. Boy: Cream? Girl: No, I take it black....Like my men. Later, in the food court, I bought my date a Coke and a slice of pizza, but it was too late. The damage had been done. “I can’t believe you’d rather sit there alone and watch that stupid movie again instead of spending time with me. "Surely," she said, “you not that much of an idiot.” “Don’t be too sure,” I said. “And don't call me Shirley.” That was our last date, obviously, thanks to David Zucker, the man who wrote and directed this ridiculously silly film along with Jim Abrams and Jerry Zucker. Like how this man is still governor of California and not behind bars is mind blowing So I'm sure most of you have heard about the fire aid controversy. You know, where they had this concert to raise $100 million for the victims of the Palisade fires. And people started asking, hey, where the did all that money go? Because there's not a single person who was a victim of the Palisade fires who's seen a cent of it. And through some investigative journalism, what we found is that they distributed the money in two rounds. - Now, the first round just went to just f*ckload of NGOs. Like some of them have nothing whatsoever to do with fire recovery - but they handed out $50 million apparently to all these corporations and nobody did a f*cking thing But then when we got to round two, this got even murkier because when you actually look at the names of who was given money under round two, you saw this little organization called Cal Volunteers Now that organization is no longer listed as a recipient on the website. Funny how once the story broke, they took their name off the website. I mean, that doesn't look guilty at all. But Cal Volunteers is an organization that was recently created by Gavin Newsome and his wife. And they have never done anything before this. This organization was created strictly for the purpose of getting fire aid money. And they've not said what they plan to do with the money they got. They haven't even said how much of the money they received? No. All they did when people noticed that Gavin Newsom's organization was getting money was take down their name and their organization from the website where the fire aid money went. My mom passed peacefully at 1:11pm two days ago, surrounded by her three little birds, my sister, my brother, and me, holding her hand and stroking her head as we sang to her. The song Three Little Birds came on at just the right moment, like it was meant for her. And it was. She took her final breaths wrapped in our love, with music, light, and presence guiding her home. She was the brightest soul I’ve ever known. A radiant artist. A lover of dance, beauty, color, and connection. She saw magic in people, even those she’d never met, and bridged the gap between hearts without hesitation. She made everyone feel seen. She brought joy everywhere she went. She taught me how to notice life, how to play, how to trust the light within me. If you’ve ever been touched by my love or joy, it was seeded by her. After she passed, we stayed with her. We thanked her spirit, and we thanked her body for holding so much love, for creating us, for doing its job beautifully despite everything. And as we left the room, we did what she would have loved most: we clapped and cheered for her. Because she deserved a standing ovation. I told her I’d see her in every rainbow. In every 11:11. In laughter. In applause. In astronauts. Even if she’d lived 30 more years, it wouldn’t have been enough. Two hundred wouldn’t have been enough. Infinity wouldn’t have been enough. That’s how special she is. I’m so grateful I got to walk this life so closely beside her. I love you, Mom. Always. Her light doesn’t end with her physical passing. While Beijing was building at full speed, something very different was happening inside India. Every major project that got announced faced the same pattern. NGO protests arrive almost immediately. We lack the manpower to build proper fortifications, and the infantry often ends up not digging deep and long enough trenches because they are exhausted from endless combat and shelling. I can't afford to have them in a trench for six days and then digging another trench for six more days; they need to rest." ▶️ I asked if they would be able to dig the fortifications when enemy FPVs fly by: "Now is the perfect time for that, because of the greenery, we can relatively safely build trenches inside the treelines 2-5 km away from the frontline. If we have a small 2-8 ton excavator, it can discreetly operate inside the treeline without breaking all the trees. It’s mobile and easy to use. Yes, we will have a risk of delivering it quickly enough to the treeline and back, but I'd rather risk it driving in the open for 15 minutes than having my infantry stuck in knee-deep trenches without proper ceiling layering with three layers of logs." ▶️ "They save the lives of our infantry. I can't afford to have them in a trench for six days and then digging another trench for six more days; they need to rest." ▶️ I asked if they would be able to dig the fortifications when enemy FPVs fly by: "Now is the perfect time for that, because of the greenery, we can relatively safely build trenches inside the treelines 2-5 km away from the frontline. If we have a small 2-8 ton excavator, it can discreetly operate inside the treeline without breaking all the trees. It’s mobile and easy to use. Yes, we will have a risk of delivering it quickly enough to the treeline and back, but I'd rather risk it driving in the open for 15 minutes than having my infantry stuck in knee-deep trenches without proper ceiling layering with three layers of logs." ▶️ "They save the lives of our infantry. If you carefully examine the latest videos, you can see that the only thing between the infantry and the enemy FPV is the fortifications." ▶️ "No, we won’t use the excavator on the front line; we will use them to build fallback positions, positions for drone operators, and for the command posts." So I've spoken about the infantry, but why does artillery need them? To better understand this, I spoke with one of the artillery brigade commander's deputies. Please read his comments: ▶️ "Let’s not start the blame game; it’s just the reality. We only have one excavator based on a Kraz for digging, and it’s always under repairs or maintenance." ▶️"Remember how many videos there were of our machines struck by lancets? Well, you see less now. We are taking measures, and those measures work. With properly built fortifications, it’s only a direct hit from a 152mm shell or a missile that can destroy the howitzer." "With excavators, we hide our equipment deep, we build separate ammo storage, and we build a bunker for the crew." ▶️"How long do you think it takes to dig a fortification to conceal a Krab with shovels? At least two weeks, and while the crew is building it, it can’t operate. If you think that’s not enough reason, I will give you another one: we had crew members injuring themselves while digging, breaking bones, two people got injured at the same time. This affected howitzer operations; you can’t properly operate it if you have two people missing." ▶️"With an excavator that you gave us, it takes us only two days and requires three times fewer people to build a Krab shelter, two ammo storages, and a bunker for the crew." As you can see, the engineering equipment is highly needed, so this month I want to set an ambitious goal to acquire three excavators, get funds for repairs, and build protective cages for Bohdana howitzers against FPVs. We already have two 5-ton excavators waiting to be repaired in Kharkiv, so our total goal is below: ✅ 3 x 5-ton Yanmar Vio50/55 excavators: $90,000 ✅ Repair parts for 5 mini excavators, 4 Yanmar and 1 Hyundai: $20,000 ✅ Repair parts and services for a 55-ton crane to support burning shipping containers for command posts for the 59th Brigade: $11,000 ✅Protective cages for Bohdana howitzers: $24,000 We are setting up a repair and maintenance shop in Kharkiv right now, and your aid is very much needed.
