The rains have started, and Nairobi is now experiencing heavy rainfall. Unfortunately, some parts of the city are already facing flooding, largely caused by blocked drainage systems. Many residents dispose of waste into these drains, leading to blockages, while in other cases, illegal construction has taken place on top of drainage lines. My message to the people of Nairobi is simple: let us all be responsible citizens. Proper waste disposal and respecting public infrastructure are key to preventing floods and protecting lives and property. The Nairobi County Government is working round the clock to unclog these drainage systems. We are also collaborating with KURA and KeNHA to ensure that major roads and highways remain passable by clearing blocked drains. As we continue with these interventions, I urge all Nairobi residents to: Avoid dumping waste into drainage systems. Report illegal constructions and blockages to the County. Exercise caution during heavy rains, especially near flooded areas.

WATCH | Massive flooding was seen along Leopold Takawira Street in Harare’s CBD, next to Harare Town House, after heavy rains. The water rose so high that even the pavement was covered by flowing water. Harare’s CBD has been experiencing similar flooding problems because of poor drainage. Many drainage pipes are blocked and receive little or no maintenance from the Harare City Council.

During our monitoring patrol to Ikorodu today, three individuals were arrested for tampering with drainage infrastructure. Let me reiterate that interference with drainage channels is a serious environmental offence. Such actions obstruct the free flow of storm water and increase the risk of flooding within our communities. The suspects will be charged accordingly. We will continue to enforce environmental laws across the State to protect our drainage systems and safeguard lives and property. #ZeroToleranceLagos

Today’s heavy rainfall put to test our drainage systems in Kampala, and the results are encouraging, although we have not yet achieved our target level of resilience. Areas including Sebana Road, Clock Tower,forest mall, golf course and Allen Road experienced flash floods, but in most of them the water cleared within about seven minutes, compared to past incidents where flooding would last for hours or days and disrupt businesses immensly. This improvement follows recent Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) drainage upgrades, including the construction of 16 crossing culverts along Allen Road and Sebana Road into Nakivubo Channel has increased the city’s capacity to tame storm water. Additional works are ongoing, including longitudinal drainage along Ben Kiwanuka Street and a planned box culvert on Namirembe Road under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Project. Two buildings, Totala Business and Qualicell, experienced basement flooding due to drainage challenges internal to them, and the KCCA drainage team has been quickly deployed with suction trucks to support them evacuate the water. As drainage improvement works continue, inconvenience caused by this natural occurrence is regreted. Our call on residents, traders & building owners is to dispose of waste responsibly and avoid blocking drainage channels. Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is working to build a cleaner, safer, and more flood-resilient Kampala.

THIS IMPUNITY MUST BE STOPPED !! Today, I was in the Central Business District (CBD) to assess the status of our drainage systems following numerous complaints from city residents, particularly after the heavy rains experienced yesterday. I wish to assure Nairobi residents that our engineers are actively on the ground working to unblock clogged drainage systems. Investigations have established that the persistent flooding in the CBD is largely caused by irresponsible dumping of garbage into drainage channels by some shop owners and hawkers. This behavior is unacceptable. The county government will address this problem through strict enforcement actions. Compliance officers have been deployed to monitor the area and ensure adherence to environmental and public health regulations. Let this serve as a warning: anyone found dumping waste into drainage systems will face immediate legal action without exception. We must all take responsibility to keep our city clean, safe, and functional.

After serving a 7-day abatement notice with no compliance, we are left with no choice but to take decisive action.
