Peter and Brutus are on a very special mission. They're giving new rescue Richard (an orphaned eland) his afternoon bottle – and helping him settle in the process! After rescuing an orphan, we typically give them a spell of 'stable rest' so they can recover in peace and learn to trust their new family. During this decompression time, Keepers slowly introduce them to fellow orphans – in Peter's words, 'that way, they'll already have friends when they're ready to join everyone out in the bush.' Where Peter goes, a flock of animals follows! He now regularly dons a special zebra coat, which the Keepers have worn since we rescued little zebra foal 'Bombi', after her mother was killed by lions (Bombi was wounded in the attack, but with treatment she is healing well). Bombi has imprinted on the coat, so she follows it everywhere, but just like Izera the eland, Bibi the buffalo, and Mr Bean the warthog, we suspect she'd now follow Peter anyway, as that seems to be the name of the game in Kaluku. This is especially true at our Kaluku Neonate Nursery in Tsavo, where an unlikely family has taken shape. There’s Twiggy the giraffe, who has appointed herself the unofficial nanny of the herd and likes to keep tabs on everyone, both human and animal. Bombi the zebra likes to 'supervise' veterinary operations at the airstrip, and Bibi the buffalo is growing up alongside them, learning the rhythms of the bush. Antelope of all sizes are cared for by Keeper Peter, and then there's Chamboi, our quirky young black rhino who arrived as a newborn. He lets out high-pitched squeaks when his milk is being prepared, an uncharacteristic but unmistakable rhino sound that means 'hurry up!' Mr Bean is always on the go! From attacking boots – a favourite pastime – to sticking his nose into other people’s business, guzzling milk, and trotting behind Keeper Peter. But, we found his pause button: the little rescued warthog loves a neck scratch, and our pilot Roan has found just the right spot! Without our supporters, we wouldn’t be positioned to rescue & raise orphaned wildlife, or protect the habitats into which they are rewilded 🙏🏻

It's why we have a whole team of caregivers caring for the orphans (that and it takes many hands to feed the orphans). It gives our Keepers extended time at home with their own families, and it means every orphan comes to know every Keeper, so that any one Keeper's absence is understood as a break, not another loss. The orphans are so lucky to have Keepers like Simon, who spare no detail for their little charges. Wondering about his eye-catching coat? That’s for Notty’s benefit: foals imprint on stripes, so any Keeper on Notty duty wears the designated zebra coat. It was a challenging operation — treating giraffes always is — but our teams, together with KWS, were determined, professional, and committed to the very end. The wire snare was removed, the wound treated, and the giraffe went on his way. This is our conservation work in action — work that happens 365 days a year, for 49 years and counting. The challenges facing Kenya's natural world are many and varied, but thanks to our supporters, we are making an impact for individual animals, entire species, and the wild places they call home. Little Daba and Maxwell, sharing a morning hello! Maxwell is the most popular member of our Nursery herd. Because he is blind – the result of a congenital eye condition – he has a forever home with us and his own spacious boma to lord over. (Black rhinos are solitary by nature and very territorial.) But with that said, Max has appointed visiting hours. When he hears the elephants mobilising in the morning, he waits by his gate to receive them as they head into the forest. Very often, there is a queue waiting to have their moment with the black rhino. On this particular day, lucky little Daba got the first slot! Meet Max and support him through an adoption:
