Government finance is not a household budget. So it is nonsense anyway.

he's backtracked cos he's trying to win over tory voters and they all think students are lazy good for nothings and don't deserve a free education - despite the fact they themselves all benefitted from one.

Debt as % of GDP makes no sense for government spending. The target should be - is there a real societal problem there - and is it good for us if can we fix it? He doesn't understand the economy - only serving the establishment.

Its partly driven by the Scottish situation. Labour wants to quietly reduce the Scottish distinctives and will end free tuition in Scotland when it wins the next Holyrood election. Its not the only reason, but is a factor in this decision.

“Difficult decisions”. Where have we heard that before? Expect more Tory-style austerity policies from Labour. State education needs to be funded and free at the point of use, all the way from nurseries to university level. It’s time to fully invest in our young people.
