Even the choreographed group from within ODM, who were only singing praises of the union with the State, seemed to forget that they were at a funeral. Was it a ceremony to endorse the union between ODM and Dr. Ruto or was it the burial of the Right Hon. Raila Odinga? They were trying to make political capital out of it and that is why there was no room for divergent opinions. They could have allowed one or two members from the opposition side to speak. It would also have made sense to give me time to speak as his running mate.

Today we gathered in Kilimani to memorialize a man's legacy on Galana road. It was a gathering of friends who walked with him through decades of struggle, fellow human rights defenders who stood beside him in courtrooms and in conscience, and his beloved widow Viloo, whose quiet strength and partnership made so much of his work possible. Pheroze Nowrojee was a Senior Counsel, poet, defender of the Constitution, and a dear friend. When the Moi government was arresting, detaining, and torturing protestors in the 1980s and 1990s, Pheroze walked into those courtrooms and stood beside political detainees, activists, journalists, and opposition leaders that no one else would touch, among them Koigi wa Wamwere and Raila Odinga, whose detentions without trial were a grim hallmark of that era. He challenged the constitutionality of sedition laws, he questioned detention without trial, and through his collective efforts with a generation of fearless lawyers, we laid much of the legal groundwork for Kenya's eventual return to multiparty democracy. The democracy we enjoy today has his fingerprints on it. He spent his life standing for justice when it was costly, defending the rule of law when it was inconvenient, and doing it all with a quiet brilliance and humanity that left everyone who encountered him changed. Today, his name is beyond the courtrooms and constitutions; it is on a road. Pheroze was more than a legal giant, he was my mentor, a guide, and a friend. The way you are handling Tundu Lissu reflects that same era—he has been arrested and remains in jail to date. Kenya has moved forward. It feels as though Tanzania is where Kenya was 40 years ago in terms of democracy. Here in Kenya, we have freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and an independent judiciary. While it may sometimes face intimidation, the existing structures still allow justice to prevail in the long run. We also have an active Law Society and strong civil society organizations that continue to advocate for democracy and accountability. We have come a long way. So, Mama Samia, please keep your advice to yourself. Remember, even both a former president and a sitting president have faced the ICC. In Kenya, the Constitution is supreme, and it must be respected.
