So did Neil deGrasse Tyson’s mentor, Carl Sagan prefer non-government exploration and colonization of space? A robust and emphatic, yes. But Neil has somehow concluded a private company funding to space is of no financial value and should be done through government programs that has kept humans grounded since Apollo. Neil has done significant damage to himself and popularization of science in general and I am more than disappointed. So I am speaking up. Here are the receipts: Sailing The Seas Of The Cosmic Oceans The Planetary Society’s Solar Sail Launch was a private funded space launch. I know Nevis not only did I donate to make this happen a number of us met with the team to think out the process. Carl Sagan, the renowned astrophysicist, cosmologist, and science communicator, made significant waves in the scientific and space exploration communities when he announced his intention to pursue the development of solar sail technology using private funds in collaboration with Russian spaceflight capabilities. Solar sails, which harness the momentum of photons from sunlight to propel spacecraft, had long been a topic of interest for Sagan, who recognized their potential for enabling long-term, low-cost exploration of the solar system and beyond. The concept of solar sailing dates back to the early 20th century, but it gained public attention during the 1970s and 1980s, thanks in part to Sagan’s advocacy. He often discussed the promise of solar sails in making space exploration more sustainable and accessible. His vision for a solar sail program crystallized in the 1990s, during a period of renewed interest in private-public partnerships and international collaboration in space exploration. Sagan’s announcement marked a major turning point in the movement to make solar sail technology a reality. In the early 1990s, Sagan began to explore the idea of privately funding a solar sail spacecraft. At the time, NASA and other national space agencies were constrained by tight budgets, making it difficult to prioritize experimental technologies like solar sails. Sagan and supporters, proposed that private financing could circumvent these limitations and accelerate progress. Sagan reached out to Russian space agencies, which had decades of expertise in rocketry and a surplus of launch vehicles following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. By 1994, Sagan had partnered with the Planetary Society, an organization he co-founded in 1980, to spearhead the development of a solar sail mission. The project: a lightweight spacecraft equipped with reflective sails that could demonstrate the feasibility of solar propulsion. With funding secured from private donors and philanthropic organizations, the program quickly gained momentum. In parallel, Sagan and his team negotiated with Russian aerospace contractors to secure a launch vehicle. The Russian space program, eager to find new applications for its technology, agreed to provide a converted missile as the launch platform for the solar sail mission. By 1995, initial designs for the solar sail spacecraft had been completed. The spacecraft, later named "Cosmos 1," was designed to use ultra-thin reflective materials to capture the momentum of sunlight. Testing of the sail and deployment mechanisms took place in the mid-1990s. Tragically, Carl Sagan passed away in December 1996, before he could see the project come to fruition. By 1999, construction of the Cosmos 1 spacecraft was completed, and the launch was scheduled to take place in 2001 using a Russian Volna rocket. While the initial launch attempt failed due to a malfunction in the rocket’s booster, the project inspired further advancements in solar sail technology with successful missions by organizations like NASA and JAXA in subsequent years. Carl’s vision lives on with the private funding efforts of Elon Musk. We endeavor to be bold to venture past humanity’s largest mountain on promethean fire. With Godspeed…

We've made a breakthrough in self-evolving AI scientists moving from "search" to "principled discovery": Scientific discovery requires that the search space itself changes, and an AI scientist must perceive this shift without intervention. We built an AI that achieves this for the first time with the ability to discover the scientific vocabulary it reasons in. Evidence, tools, artifacts, verifiers, failures & claims become typed provenance. We show three distinct modalities: 1) retrieval, adding known objects; 2) search, exploring a fixed schema; and critically: 3) discovery, a verified regime transition. We solve the open-endedness evaluation problem by lifting agentic workflows into a typed copresheaf and proving, via a Kan obstruction, that true discovery is not unbounded generation but a verifiable schema expansion: old evidence is transported by Left Kan extension, and genuine novelty is mathematically quantified by the pointwise residual beyond the transported image - separating discovery from mere search and making novelty objective and measurable rather than a subjective judgment or benchmark delta. Our AI scientist is built in a way that does not pre-conceive the approach it chooses; instead, we endow the system with formal power to adapt, evolve, and reason from first principles. Case studies include: 1⃣Builder/Breaker model that discovers mode-conditioned compliance in proteins; 2⃣CategoryScienceClaw that finds anisotropic fiber-network stiffness rules. Great work in collaboration with my graduate student Fiona Wang MIT Dept of BE F.Y. Wang & M.J. Geological Diplomacy Why Russia Should Maintain a Presence in UNESCO Amid politically strained relations with UNESCO after 2022, Russia will maintain a working channel of interaction through geosciences and geoparks—one of the few areas where we retain expert weight and a clear international agenda. ▪️The main recent result of this interaction is the Toratau Geopark in Bashkortostan, approved for inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks network in 2025–2026. For Russia, this is not just a local success: the idea of a national geopark system with a base site in Bashkortostan is being promoted as a model for replication in other regions of the country. ▪️A geopark is not just a "beautiful place with rocks," but an official status for a territory where geology is used as a foundation for education, tourism, and sustainable development. The status is important because it confers international recognition, attracts tourists and investment, opens access to UNESCO's network of experts and programs, and strengthens the country's position in the soft science and cultural agenda. There are currently approximately 229 geoparks in 50 countries worldwide. ▪️The Karpinsky Institute, which also organizes specialized events at UNESCO, is responsible for preparing and providing expert support for applications. This allows the Institute to remain a visible participant in the international geoscience network, despite the general context. 🖍At the same time, the Institute is implementing an educational project with an international reach—"Karpinsky Classes": specialized geological classrooms with equipment, curricula, and online courses. Over the past two years, classrooms have opened in Cuba, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Ghana, and the CIS countries. We have been following them for a long time. 🚩A separate area is inclusive geology: adapting geoscience education for children with disabilities and audiences with limited access to STEM. In other words, geology and related sciences are being redesigned to make them accessible to those who are typically excluded by barriers—for health or social reasons. At international forums, this is presented as a contribution to the accessibility of science in countries of the Global South—an agenda that always resonates with UNESCO. 🏳️The third track is scientific. Russia remains a country with a significant base in polar research, and geophysical data from Antarctica fits into UNESCO's program on geodynamics, plate tectonics, and climate change. This is an argument that is difficult to ignore: in a number of areas, Russian science is simply indispensable as a provider of fundamental data. 📌Overall, all the aforementioned tracks together form an important and convenient tool of soft power in the face of sanctions. Russia demonstrates that it remains part of the global scientific community, is responsible for major sectors of the scientific agenda, and is building long-term ties with countries in Africa and Eurasia through education and science. In official documents of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO, geoparks and geosciences are explicitly cited as one of the few positive avenues of cooperation. This makes sense: while contact on many fronts is frozen, science—sustainable development and education—remains a channel that neither side is interested in completely closing.
