One day he walked into a meeting and told Jobs they needed to do market research on Oregon Trail. A massive title. Running in 110,000 school buildings across the country. An update would cost 12 to 15 million dollars. He wanted to know what students wanted. What teachers wanted. What parents wanted. Jobs stopped him cold. He did not want surveys. Did not want focus groups. Did not want to know what anybody thought. Because in his mind, none of that mattered. What mattered was signal. Everything else is the noise. The challenge is learning the difference. That idea completely changed how I think about productivity. Today, one of my phones is dedicated to signal, which is business, decisions, and the things that actually move the needle. The other is full of noise, social media, videos, endless scrolling, and distractions. There’s nothing wrong with either, but if you can’t separate signal from noise, the noise will consume your entire day. Get your three things done first. Everything else comes after.

Almost none of them know it's a filter, and funds pay quants $600K for the version they were never taught." a moving average is a filter. it smooths a jumpy price to reveal the slower signal hiding underneath. that is all it is, and it is the bluntest one there is. the same math gives you filters that lag less and cut more noise, and that gap is a real edge. this is the second half of what Simons was doing. first you accept the market is a signal buried in noise. then you build the filter that reads it, and the moving average on your chart is the crudest possible version. Oppenheim builds the real ones at the board in this lecture. here is the catch. a filter only helps if there is a real signal under the noise. smooth pure randomness and you will see a beautiful trend that means nothing. the filter is free. knowing there is a real signal worth filtering is the edge.

Today, Europe demonstrated the exact type of unity that is required. All 27 EU countries acted together. This is a clear signal to Moscow that Europe will withstand and will not be broken by any destructive waves that the Kremlin constantly creates. But this is also a clear signal across the Atlantic. A signal that Europe is taking on commitments. Strong security commitments. We are looking forward to America's decisions.
