Zongoloni's journey has been remarkable. An orphan of poaching, rescuers could barely hold back tears when they reached her and her dying mother. It's been a long path to recovery, and along the way, she's found friendship, safety and sanctuary in our care. She was one of the first to go wild from Umani, leading a group of orphans affectionately called the 'night clubbers'. But the icing on the cake came last year, when she became a mother for the first time – to a little boy called Zigi. As mothers go, Zongoloni is a wonderful mum, and works hard to balance her parental responsibilities with her own needs. Case in point: when Zigi wanted to nurse this month, she wouldn't stop – too busy keeping up with her friends. Zigi screamed in protest, but she walked on. Parenting is complicated. Three generations of elephants — alive today because of one life saved. The female at the rear is Mulika, the mother and grandmother of those walking before her. We rescued her in 2000, after poachers left her an orphan. In 2011, Mulika gave birth to her first calf, Mwende — the second-largest here — followed by Mkuu (born 2020) and baby Moe (born 2024). In 2023, Mwende made Mulika a grandmother — when she had a daughter of her own, little Mala! We feel privileged to witness this ever-growing elephant dynasty flourishing in the wilds of northern Tsavo East. Meet Mulika and her family:

Shahjahanpur, UP A girl was dressed as a bride and doing Nikah. A Hindu organisation reached there and found out she's a 16-year-old Hindu girl. Police arrived and it was stopped. The girl's mother was supporting the Nikah. She was having an affair with the Muslim boy's uncle. How shameless can a mother be to marry her own 16 year old daughter to a Muslim? Her mother and all those involved should be arrested and punished.

In July 2012, a two-year-old calf was found alone and emaciated on Mgeno Ranch, bordering Tsavo National Park. She had almost certainly lost her mother to poaching. Named after the area where she was found, Panda bypassed our Nairobi Nursery entirely and we raised her at Voi instead, surrounded by the older orphans who understood what she had been through. Now, this once-vulnerable youngster is a mother! In early December 2025, Panda came home for the holidays – and she brought someone with her: her daughter, Panya! Her name means "mouse" in Swahili and it suits her. We now get the privilege of watching Panya grow up when Panda visits, just like this! Remind yourself of the moment we first met Panya:

Mud isn't optional for an elephant. It cools the skin in the heat, blocks the sun and keeps the biting insects off. A wild calf would learn it from the older females in her herd, but Kaikai is an orphan, so she's learning it from her Keepers and the other orphans in our care. She's determined that she's not the only one to get muddy either – a flick of the ear gets the Keeper filming this sprayed with mud! Kaikai just turned one and has years of bottles, Keepers and bush school ahead before she's ready for a wild herd of her own. Adopting Kaikai helps fund that journey:

She then proceeds to tell her father that she will ALWAYS be on his side. A lot of people(women) thought it was corny for him to record the interaction. I applaud him! This can be used as evidence. Especially when the mother says her daughter hates to be with her dad. Video evidence and text receipts will always be accepted as proof. A lot of men go through this everyday. They left the mom, not the child. Remember who hurts in the end when you keep them from their dad.

"I was told by one of my daughter's friends that her and my daughter have both been doing this challenge," He described the devastating impact on his daughter and family. "My daughter is now in ICU. She's been here for five days. It's heartbreaking, you know, to watch your loved one go through this. She was perfectly fine Sunday. Within 24 hours, she's tried this, and she's laying lifeless," he said. So sad. Prayers for her recovery 🙏🏻
