Kobe faced a Top 10 player in his own conference 6 times in the playoffs in Tim Duncan. KOBE overall outplayed both Duncan and Shaq in almost every single matchup between them, then TOTALLY dominated Duncan without Shaq in 2008. After 1999, with all 3 players on the floor, KOBE WAS THE BEST. It was obvious and everyone knew. And Shaq was the worst. This is dumb because without context everything sounds right. But the fact is that Kobe played with one of the worst rosters during possibly the strongest Western Conference of all time. The year LeBron went to the Finals in 2007, the entire All NBA 1st team and the entire All NBA 1st defensive team was represented by 10 PLAYERS ALL FROM THE WEST (Kobe being on both of them). That’s 10 players that were the cream of the crop of the league on both ends all in the freaking Western conference. Lebron coasted through the East always. From 2014 - 2018, the Eastern conference didn’t have ONE SINGLE ALL NBA 1st TEAM SELECTION (outside of LeBron James). All the best players played in the Western conference. Back to 2007, Kobe had an all time bad roster and yet he played the Suns team that boasted two All NBA 1st team players in Nash and Amari. Kobe’s averages in that series he lost to the Suns: 33PPG| 5Reb| 4Ast on 46%FG| 36%3PT| 92%FT When it’s LeBron it’s “He loses to tougher competition but he’s great”. When it’s Kobe it’s “He’s the mamba, what happened?” Different set of rules for Kobe always when Stephen A Smith is on the mic. Admitted LeBron is the GOAT Stan Van Gundy said “we wanted LeBron to score”. LeBron’s 38PPG was surely a feat against Orlando but he still was not the best player in the league. As the Magic still punished the Cavs and beat them in 6 and would have been 5 if not a great buzzer beater from LeBron. LeBron was also a -7 for the series. But when then Magic faced Kobe they were pretty much dominated because Kobe was the scoring engine and a threat all around the court. So the Magic could not just load up on the Lakers role players because Kobe’s action was putting so much pressure on them. They had to watch Kobe when he was around his spots in the mid-range and it often led to Pau Gasol having more one on ones in the post and even slashing and getting easy hand-offs from Kobe. Kobe averaged 32PPG with 7.4 assists and was a +49 for the series. It was total domination when he was on the court. He opened up everything and his action was way too much for the Magic. There was no defense for Kobe at this time in his career. He was the best player in the league which is why he went to 3 straight finals out of the gutter Western Conference and won back to back with Pau Gasol as his running mate

How you win matters, what you do after losing matters. Creating a superteam in an already weak conference in your prime should always be a disqualification from GOAT discussions. Kobe didn't run after losing to the Celtics in 2008, he ran it back and got his revenge in 2010 vs Boston. He won back to back championships w/o Shaq, He won w/o a superteam and top75 teammates, he actually elevated his teammates and didn't make them change up their game. Paul Pierce acknowledges how great Pau was because they ran thru him in 2008 and but saw a major difference in his attitude and mentality in the 2010 Finals. LeBron James here is talking about how great the Celtics were with 4 All-Stars but he had to run to a Finals MVP and another top 5 member of his draft class to start winning rings. Kobe was the opposite and left free rings on the table with Shaq in order to cement his own legacy. This fact alone will never put LeBron above Kobe in the all-time standings.
