For centuries, people in Southeast Asia have used the leaves of kratom trees as a home remedy to soothe nerves and ease pain. Recently, its popularity has exploded in the U.S. as a way to alleviate anxiety and the effects of opioid withdrawal. These products are widely available at smoke shops and gas stations. But kratom is poorly regulated, and synthetic versions contain high concentrations of a powerful compound that U.S. officials say should be restricted. Ali Rogin spoke with Kirby Wilson, senior politics reporter at the Tampa Bay Times, for more.

Amid FDA calls to ban kratom/7-OH, Cato Institute Senior Fellow Jeffrey A. Singer claims there are no confirmed overdose deaths and that TYLENOL is responsible for far more poisonings. “Out of 600,000 calls to the poison control centers in the United States… 53 were related to 7-OH or kratom, or 0.00009%, as opposed to, for comparison during that same period, 11% were from Tylenol overdoses.”

A mother just shared the autopsy results on her son. Her son Masen was healthy. Perfect. Getting ready to play college football. He died in May from 7-OH kratom — the concentrated strain of an energy supplement. Since his passing, it was pulled from shelves. Now there’s a push to bring it back. This isn’t hidden. It’s sold openly in convenience stores and gas stations, sitting right next to energy drinks and candy. No prescription. Often no real oversight. Marketed like a harmless supplement while acting more like an opioid. That’s what these stores are stocking. Products strong enough to kill a healthy young man with his whole life ahead of him. I feel so horrible for her. As a parent, I cannot imagine her pain and grief. No parent should have to bury their child over something bought at the corner store.

This bag of medicine costs about $8 a bottle in the U.S. In Cuba, the same supply can cost the equivalent of a month’s income or simply isn’t available at all. Multiply that across thousands of bottles and you’re looking at something worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in a country being economically strangled to death. Basic medicine turned into a luxury, priced out of reach for ordinary people. This is what passes as “foreign policy” for the American empire. That’s why I’m going to Cuba, not to sell this medicine, but to deliver it to the people who deserve and need it the most.

Calls it “a tool” like stop-motion or CGI before and what ultimately matters is “imagination, originality” of whoever uses the tool: “I think AI — used in the right way — is a tool like any other tool. [The original] King Kong…was stop-motion and done by a person moving a rubber creature. Why shouldn't somebody on a computer using AI software be able to create their own imagery? They should. It's a tool. It's no different from many other tools that have existed over the years. But the other side of it is that it's always going to come down to the imagination and originality of the person feeding the instructions into the AI program. It's not that you're going to type in an instruction and it's going to generate your shot, and that's that. The question is: is it actually interesting? Is it funny? Is it imaginative? And are you going to stitch it together to make a narrative, a story? Some people will make really great films that way. Some people will do exactly the same process and their film will be crap, just like in the normal film industry.
