When CGI is good, people say it's good. When it's Excellent, people say nothing because they're clueless.

are there even any movies without CGI out there left? ... this whole argument makes me want to get on my soapbox and preach to the uninitiated

I legit wonder that myself. Digital Artists are in every single genre, at every budget level.

The difference between the two being that the Crown aims to feel real, and uses “physical” cameras. Marvel movies attempt to be hyperrealistic but end up looking plasticky. Even the Boys feels more credible because they use a more naturalistic treatment. So it’s not about the cg.

CGI is there to do what cannot be feasibly or even practically done IRL.

The most amazing revelation I saw was a reel with Monk, King’s Speech and Ugly Betty how they used it and it was able to fly under the radar because it was so practical

The best CG is when no one complains about it because they didn’t realized it’s CGI

Reminds me of Zodiac. There is an insane amount of CGI in that movie that almost no one is aware of.

My other half worked on The Crown. SO MUCH VFX! A lot of daytime interior shots done at night. I'd have never known unless they'd pointed it out.

Ask him if the Hogwarts in Harry Potter was all real clearly Marvel invented CGI and if they actually went to space to film Star Wars movies
