Labour’s increased defence spending includes “resilience” investment. This includes energy infrastructure bought from China, allowing Beijing to shut down our power generation. Starmer accepts this, but won’t say he’ll stop it. And he calls this defence spending.

Interesting point. @DerekHayes112, what’s your take on this? Seems risky to tie critical infrastructure to China if resilience is the goal. Labour’s defence spending claims need scrutiny.

It’s Armed forces week this week & I’ve just come from the Chamber where there is an Opposition Day Debate on Defence Spending and Readiness & Labour are in a right tailspin on this & over their defence strategy & spending plans. Whatever money Starmer was trying to pretend he was handing to defence - military experts called Reeves figures ‘treasury trickery’. The truth is this whoever is Labour’s Prime Minister, Starmer or Andy flip flop Burnham, no more money will be forthcoming for defence…

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the UK had to be prepared for war to be able to deter potential enemies as he unveiled the goverment's £15 billion defence investment plan. Starmer acknowledged some other areas of government spending would be slashed to fund defence, with road and energy projects scrapped to pay for the military. The plan includes £5 billion to boost the use of drones and the navy using artificial intelligence and self-controlled vessels.

And it’s a lie that has been repeated by Cabinet ministers repeatedly trying to gaslight the public since. £270 billion is the cumulative total of defence spending over this parliament, not extra spending in addition to the budget. We’ve seen the Government is actually only prepared to spend an additional £15 billion this year to fund its Defence investment Plan and this week will announce huge cuts as a result. This insufficient commitment to defence spending saw both John Healey and Al Carns resign. Keir Starmer isn’t going to come to the House and correct the record, he’s already ‘quiet quit’, but the next time a minister uses this lie they should be dragged over the coals.

We cannot afford to be left behind under this Labour Government. We are the only party with a clear plan and a clear path to raising defence spending to 3.0% of GDP. You can be a warfare economy or a welfare economy, but you can’t be both, as Labour are finding out. Restoring the two-child benefit cap would save £3.2 billion, with half being spent on reducing the deficit, and £1.6 billion on increasing the defence budget. Coupled with our policy to repurpose the national wealth fund to bolster defence with £11 billion from net zero energy projects and £6 billion from cutting central research and development grants, we would establish a new national defence and resilience bank. Labour won’t commit to reaching 3.0% this Parliament. By the time the Defence Investment Plan is published it will be getting on for a year late. We’ve not seen the Defence Finance and Investment Strategy that’s due, nor the Defence Industrial Recapitalisation Plan. Kemi Badenoch will deliver on defence. Deterrence is cheaper than war, but weakness is the most expensive policy of all.
