In winter, Lake Baikal in southern Siberia freezes with ice more than a metre thick and so clear you can see deep below. As temperatures change, pressure builds and the ice fractures with deep booming cracks, forming huge fault-like lines that can stretch for tens of kilometres along the shore. The sounds can echo for miles across the frozen lake.

This is Lake Baikal in Siberia, the deepest and oldest lake on Earth. Every winter, much of its surface freezes into huge sheets of ice crossed by cracks, with bubbles trapped underneath. But the numbers behind Baikal are even more interesting. The lake is roughly 25 million years old and more than 1,600 meters deep. It holds about 20% of the world’s fresh surface water, roughly as much as all five Great Lakes combined. Baikal formed in a rift where the Earth’s crust is still slowly pulling apart. That age and isolation also gave it some unusual wildlife. Many species found here exist nowhere else, including the Baikal seal, or nerpa. By mid-January, the lake is usually covered in ice. In parts of the north, that ice can remain into June. So those winter photos are showing more than clear ice and frozen bubbles. That is despite the whole Chinese side check point was swept away along with the Nepalese checkpoint. The current explanation is as follows: large glacier on the local ice mountain melted, forming a barrier lake. This barrier lake accumulated a large amount of water, with soil and ice blocks forming a natural dam that held it in a depression. Due to the melting of ice blocks at the dam mouth, soil erosion, or a small earthquake, the dam burst. A mixture of water, mud, and ice rapidly descended 1200 meters from the ice mountain, forming a debris flow flood peak. After surging for several kilometers, the flood engulfed the river mouth where Jilong Port is located. Some ice blocks remain at the bottom of the lake. Friends familiar with glaciers can see that these ice blocks have the distinctive blue ice unique to glaciers (due to the pressure from the ice layers causing high ice density, forming blue ice, which will lose its color and turn into ordinary ice blocks after melting for several days).

Most of us dump a bag of ice in, throw the drinks on top, and spend the next three hours fishing through slush for a can that’s now floating sideways with a soggy label. In Texas heat that gets old fast. The fix is almost too simple: ice on the bottom, a cheap oven rack or grill grate right on top of the ice, then the drinks sit on the rack. Melt water stays down where it belongs. Everything stays organized, nothing gets waterlogged, and you can actually see what you have without digging. Two extras that make it even better for long days: • Freeze a few water bottles the night before. They act as extra ice and turn into drinking water as they melt. • Pre-chill the drinks. The rack works a lot better when you’re not starting with warm cans. We’ve used this for cookouts, lake days, and family gatherings ever since. No more slush-dive. Just grab and go. Simple change. Big difference.

Decades later, Clas Svahn, the head of the world's largest UFO archive, led an expedition to the lake with divers, sonar, and ground-penetrating radar. Their expert said if something was there, it wouldn't be on the lake bottom. It would be embedded in the mud, roughly two meters down. That is exactly where they got a return. An object. Still sitting there. The problem? The lake is inside a protected national park. Even if they find it, they're not allowed to bring anything out. Clas and his team are going back next year with 3D imaging to get a better look. This is one of the best physically verifiable UFO cases in the world and almost nobody is talking about it.
