Paul Aron on McLaren’s strategy: “From my perspective, the only way I could kind of justify it is I thought maybe they wanted to leave Oscar out because they were afraid of giving away track position to Max. But then if you take Lando's situation, to be fair, it was a no-brainer to pit him because he had no first place to lose, so he wasn’t giving away any track position. And then I thought maybe they didn’t pit Lando either because they wanted to keep it fair between the two drivers. That’s the only explanation I could give it, that once they realised that they’d messed it up with Oscar, they kept Lando on the same strategy, not to give one the edge over the other. But ultimately I think everyone knew straight away that was a mistake. And it doesn’t matter how quick you are, I think nowadays with these cars, even how close they are, you can’t expect to make back a pit-stop gap with just pure race pace. So yeah, I think everyone knew that it was a bit of a mistake from them.”

Carlos on his pitlane penalties: “We had contact in turn one, a big melee, three or four cars side by side. In that contact we damaged the rim of the first set of tires, which were giving massive vibrations. We lost all the sensors of the front tires, which meant we lost the possibility to engage the pit limiter, which every time I was going through the pitlane, we were having issues because the sensor was under-reading and I didn't know at which speed I was going. So every time we were in the pits we were getting a penalty, which in the end, even if we were on for points scoring position today, we just had too many issues in the car, too many issues from that turn one racing incident.”

Q: Was there any temptation at any point when that red flag came out to think, if I just go off and just stop somewhere, I'm going to be on pole tomorrow? Carlos: Did it go through my head? Yes. But I remember what I stand for, which is values and fair competition. And trust me, it's super easy to fake an accident, especially today in Baku. I knew going out I was also one of the first cars so I could have perfectly done that, but your values is what defines you in the future and in your career and I think today was a day to, if there was anyone out there better than me, let them beat me. I knew they were out there are a couple of guys with three to five tenths quicker car that probably were anyway going to beat me, and in the end it was only one which was Max and yeah, very proud of today's quali because every time we had a good chance to put a good lap, we put it on the board.
