We’re investing in our police and frontline personnel so they have the resources they need to fight crime and protect Ontario communities. That includes an investment of $191 million to purchase seven new helicopters that will help local police crack down on auto theft and keep one step ahead of criminals. Last month, I had the chance to see the first of these helicopters at the Peel Regional Police hangar.

The threats members of Congress like myself and my colleague, Tim Burchett, have been receiving are putting a severe strain on already limited police resources. My local police department has been doing a great job, and I’m so thankful for everything they do to keep me and our entire community safe. Police officers nationwide are underpaid and deal with the worst part of their communities. It’s a shame that a group of people is unnecessarily putting them in harm’s way, and they should be brought to justice with the full force of the law.

Non-crime hate incidents (NCHIs) are a waste of police time and taxpayers’ money. Since their introduction in 2014, police forces across England and Wales are estimated to have spent at least 660,000 hours investigating and recording NCHIs. Baroness Butler-Sloss — the first female Lord Justice of Appeal — has backed proposals from our General Secretary, Lord Young of Acton, and former Met Police Commissioner, Lord Hogan-Howe to abolish NCHIs, delete historic NCHIs, and ensure no future non-criminal hate incident is considered in employment background checks. Chief Myron Demkiw joined Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay at Union Station yesterday to discuss ongoing work to enhance safety at Canada’s busiest transit hub. Over the past several months, Toronto Police and Metrolinx have been working together to establish a permanent police presence at Union Station, including dedicated space for TPS officers. This builds on the increased police presence already underway at Union — with Metrolinx special constables working alongside TPS officers — and is part of our broader work to enhance safety and the sense of safety across the transit system. An enhanced visible and consistent police presence helps us respond quickly when needed, build relationships with transit partners and the public, and help people feel safe as they travel through the city.
