Much of Europe has been in the freezer this week but a big change is coming with milder air moving from from tomorrow. Cooler air will return but not as cold as many parts have been. Turning wet and windy here in Ireland for Sunday but up to 11c.

A cold start to 2026 is looking more likely on the weather models and it could bring some proper cold with temps well below normal. At present risk of snow in Ireland is low but that can quickly change if the cold air does push down. Animation shows upper air temp forecast.

If you are getting tired of the warm humid or heavy weather you will be glad to know fresher air is on the way from Tuesday. The latest upper air temperature forecast here shows the edge of the plume of hot air over Europe moving away from Ireland. It will also ease off in France later in the coming week and ease a little in Portugal and Spain later in the week.

☁️WEEKEND STORM REMAINS SOUTH — NO CHANGE TO THE FORECAST As mentioned earlier this week, guidance continues to support a moisture-loaded southern system staying south of NYC Sunday night. The AI models tried to develop a more impactfulstorm (which I felt was over baked) and it appears even that has collapsed the idea of cold air and a fully phased storms. Clouds dominate the second half of the weekend. There is likely a northern fringe that brushes central NJ with light showers or a mix — but overall, no meaningful impacts expected. Pacific air runs the show going into next week. I will provide my thoughts on the rest of winter via a VIDEO/full story next week.

While we have fresher air to start the week the weather models show the air mass over much of Western Europe will go from below average to back above average pretty quickly. Heat is likely to start building back in by the weekend and into early next week. How hot it will get is unclear yet but we could see mid to high twenties in Ireland again. Spain and Portugal over 40c is possible in parts again this week.

Over the next 10 days heavy snow will fall in spots with over 100 CM in parts of the Balkans and 50cm+ over the Alps and central Italian mountain ranges. This is all due to unusually warm air over Greenland, called the Greenland Block. The colder air is pulling away and warmer air is slowly moving towards us with over 20c for weekend and early next week. We still have more rain to come tonight and Thursday with some showers on Friday but the weekend and early next week look mainly dry. If you are heading to Spain or Portugal some parts there will see up to 38c. Up the Villa!

COLD is making big News on the internet for next week & yes, next week Arkansas to Florida to New Hampshire = coldest air of the season so far. 20+degrees below average but not looking like widespread record cold. Reminder: mid-January is climatologically the coldest for many.
