Today in Kyiv, a Summit is taking place that has brought together 24 countries, primarily from Europe. All of our European neighbors are represented: Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, and Belarus. We all support the aspiration of the Belarusian people to free themselves from Russian interference, and we know that Russia is now trying to drag Belarus even deeper into this war against Ukraine. We value every expression of support from Belarusians for a free Ukraine, and we know that the day will come when there will once again be good-neighborly relations between our states – based on the real independence of both Ukraine and Belarus from Moscow. This is exactly what we discussed today with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and her team, who are visiting Kyiv. Ukraine has never been a threat to Belarus. And we are grateful to those Belarusians who stand with Ukraine – now, when the fate of both our independence and the independence of every nation that borders Russia is being decided.

I met with the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs. Security cooperation was our main focus. We count on signing an agreement with Latvia in the Drone Deal format to build a multi-layered air defense system against different types of threats. I proposed this cooperation to the President. We will send our experts to Latvia to exchange experience and provide direct assistance in protecting the airspace. It is important to work together to strengthen Europe’s defense. We also discussed the overall security situation in the region. The initial cause of all challenges and threats is Russia and its aggression. I am grateful that we share a common position on this. Special attention was given to diplomatic work and Ukraine’s European integration. It is important to open all negotiation clusters as soon as possible, and there are now favorable conditions for this. Latvia consistently supports us in this regard, and I am grateful for it.

Living in a European country is a choice, but integration is not optional. Latvia has every right to protect its language, identity and security, especially after decades of Soviet occupation and amid Russia’s continuing aggression against Ukraine. Yesterday in Kyiv, we officially opened the Mission of Democratic Belarus in Ukraine. This is an important step toward stronger, more systematic cooperation between democratic Belarus and Ukraine. I am grateful to Ukrainian officials, including Deputy Foreign Minister Yevhen Perebyinis, for joining us, and to everyone who helped make this Mission possible. We must do more to support Ukraine: politically, informationally, through cooperation with Ukrainian institutions, by standing with Belarusian volunteers and fighters, and by supporting Belarusians living in Ukraine. This Mission will make our work more consistent and visible. It will be a platform for dialogue, practical cooperation, and support. It will help Ukrainians know whom to work with, and Belarusians in Ukraine know where to turn. I wish Sviatlana Shatilina success as Head of the Mission, representing the democratic forces of Belarus in Ukraine. A free Belarus and a free Ukraine are part of the same future.
