While the world focuses on the Iran war, important developments are unfolding around Belarus. This is a short summary of my thoughts. A longer and much more detailed post is in first comment. Let me know how this double format works. Today, Lukashenko begins his first official visit to North Korea (March 25-26), discussing economic & military cooperation with Kim Jong Un. This cooperation is in close coordination with Russia. Meanwhile, the US is considering further development of relations with Belarus and a possible meeting of Lukashenko and Trump is being discussed. The US already removed sanctions from Belarus potash, some banks and the finance ministry. Obviously, Belarus is a Russian proxy. The US won't "detach" Belarus from Russia. Its goal is to create a controlled channel to Belarus and Russian potash (the US is 92% dependent on their imports). Currently, China takes about 70% of Belarussian potash. This may shift if a part of Belarus potash is bought by the US. Fertilizer prices have sharply increased due to the war in the Middle East. Implications for Ukraine: the risk is Belarus becoming a functional buffer for Russian resources. We need our own pragmatic strategy to counter that.⤵️

🇱🇻 Latvia has completed construction of a fence along its border with Russia In total, around 280 kilometers of fencing have been built along the Latvian–Russian border, creating a continuous barrier in areas where this was technically feasible. The project cost approximately €146 million. The border is still being equipped with surveillance cameras and other technical systems, while patrol roads, bridges, and additional engineering infrastructure are under construction. Full completion of the works is planned by the end of 2026. Earlier, Latvia had already completed 145 kilometers of fencing along its border with Belarus.

Mykhailo Tkach, a journalist of Ukrainska Pravda media, went to the Polish border and conducted an investigation to find out the scale of trade turnover between Poland and Belarus. It turned out that while Ukrainian agricultural products are blocked at the border, Poland pays hundreds of millions to companies from Russia and Belarus for seeds, oil and animal feed. ▪️ Poland trades with Russia and Belarus, while Ukraine is banned even from transit. Ukrainian agricultural exports to Poland fell by 40% last year. In August, amid protests, Poland banned imports of wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds from Ukraine, and in September, it added rapeseed cake and meal, corn bran, wheat flour and derivatives. Since April 2023, Ukrainian grain has been going through Poland only in transit. Despite this, protests at the border continue. There are about 6 thousand cars in line to leave Ukraine for Poland, and another 2 thousand to enter Poland Imports of agricultural products from Russia to Poland in 2023 reached $117 and exceeded the level of 2021, i.e. the level before the full-scale war. Poland purchased $55 million from Lukashenko, which also exceeds the profits of previous years. ▪️ "Disservice" to ourselves Poland not only continues to trade with the aggressor state and its satellite, but also increases imports of agricultural products. The situation already shows that the Poles have done a "disservice" to themselves, because Polish grain has been displaced by Russian grain on foreign markets. Today, in Slavutych, in the north of our country, I met with the heads of communities of the northern regions – Kyiv and Chernihiv regions. It is very important to support our people here and strengthen our defenses, and that is exactly what we are doing. This concerns protective infrastructure – fortifications and other defensive measures – as well as strengthening the border, which will be reinforced further. It also concerns our Defense and Security Forces stationed in this direction – toward Chernihiv and Kyiv from the territory of neighboring Belarus, which Russia is eager to draw deeper into this war, and from Russia’s Bryansk region. We have the capability to strengthen our defenses. We also have the capability to act preventively with regard to Russian territory from which threats may emerge, and with regard to the de facto leadership of Belarus, which must stay on its toes – that is, clearly understand that there will be consequences if aggressive actions against Ukraine, against our people, are taken.

I held a meeting with Latvian Defense Minister Raivis Melnis, who is visiting Ukraine on his first trip abroad since taking office. We discussed the implementation of the Drone Deal signed between our countries this week. Through this format, in particular, we will be able to share with Latvia our expertise in air defense. Ukraine is always ready to help friends who have stood with us since the very beginning of Russia’s aggression. And, importantly, we share the same understanding: security challenges arise because Russia refuses to end its war through diplomacy. We also discussed opportunities to finance joint projects under SAFE and cooperation within the European Union, NATO, and the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF). I thank Latvia and all the Latvian people for their support!

Russia has lost $7 billion in oil revenues due to UAV attacks - President Zelenskyy comments on strikes against Russian oil facilities and promises further actions. Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on strikes against oil infrastructure in the Russian Federation and announced further measures. “Based on the results of this April, our long-range ‘sanctions’ have reached a new level in three components: reducing Russian oil revenues, range, and intensity.
