It does work. I pour cans of room temperature soda over wet ice with no problem. It drastically reduces the ice's surface area and nucleation points. Just tilt the glass and pour slowly down the side.

It's simple, pick the cup up and tilt it at an angle and pour the soda in on the side of the cup and let it flow down into the bottom around the ice. You will get next to no fizz.
