Last week, I received reviews from a journal. 2 of the 3 reviewers pointed out the same issue. 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑝𝑎𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑠 𝑚𝑖𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑒𝑤. Upon checking, I realized the paper was very relevant. I was surprised how I missed this paper. I re-run the search terms on Google Scholar. The identified paper still went missing. Then I tried searching using ResearchRabbit ResearchRabbit picked the paper. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐑𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐭. 1. I logged into 2. I searched 2-3 papers I already knew 3. Read 100 paywalled research papers for free every month! You don't even need a university account to do this. Here's how to read paywalled papers on JSTOR for free: 1. Go to jstor(dot)org and click on "Register" in the top-right corner. You can register with your personal Google or Outlook account. Or, you can create a JSTOR account manually. 2. Once you've logged in to your JSTOR account, click on "Workspace" in the menu bar. Then click on "Create folder." Choose a name for your folder and click on "Create."Creating folders in Workspace is a great way to keep your papers organized. 3. Type in the keywords in the search bar to find relevant papers. JSTOR willl give you a list of papers. To read a paper for free, click on "Read online." You will see a preview of the paper. Scroll down a bit and click on "Read Online" again. 4. If you find the paper super-relevant to your project, click on "Save" on the top of the article. Choose the folder you just created in your Workspace and save the paper in it. Go to jstor(dot)org and click on "Register" in the top-right corner. You can register with your personal Google or Outlook account. Or, you can create a JSTOR account manually. 2. Once you've logged in to your JSTOR account, click on "Workspace" in the menu bar. Then click on "Create folder." Choose a name for your folder and click on "Create."Creating folders in Workspace is a great way to keep your papers organized. 3. Type in the keywords in the search bar to find relevant papers. JSTOR willl give you a list of papers. To read a paper for free, click on "Read online." You will see a preview of the paper. Scroll down a bit and click on "Read Online" again. 4. If you find the paper super-relevant to your project, click on "Save" on the top of the article. Choose the folder you just created in your Workspace and save the paper in it. ✨ Today I rebuilt 🏔️ AltaVista Search, the main search engine before Google existed The problem: if you press the 🔍Search button in MSIE4 it'll open a sidebar with AltaVista in it that opens: http:// home . microsoft . com/search/search.asp But that URL doesn't resolve anymore of course, so how do I make this work? I asked Claude Code and built a Dnsmasq DNS server that routes all regular DNS queries to Cloudflare but for home . microsoft . com it hijacks it and sends it to my own server Then I let Nginx respond to that doamin and show the Altavista Search sidebar, I had to rebuild the design from a video on YouTube because I couldn't find any actual archeological remains of it anymore Also Altavista Search of course doesn't exist anymore so it can't respond to queries either so I use a SERP API to query search results from Google and display them instead This is stuff I wouldn't even be close to doing before AI, I'd have no idea how to configure Dnsmasq to spoof queries like this The search engine results are proxied via my HTTP proxy so MSIE4 can open most sites (because old browsers don't support HTTPS and most JS!)

This morning at NeurIPS, Rich Sutton reminded us that we need continual learning to reach AGI. This afternoon, Ali Behrouz presented a Google poster paper, Nested Learning, which provides new ideas on the path to continual learning. I recorded the 40 minute talk as it might be useful for some researchers in the audience. For the rest of us, I subscribe to Andrej Karpathy's suspicion that it will take a 5-10 papers like this to move us to AGI from where we are now, just like it took about 10 papers to move from 2012's AlexNet to ChatGPT. At the very end, I ask Ali how far along to continual learning this represents.
