Russians seem to believe that the West turned Ukraine against Russia, invited them to join NATO, supported or ignored what they see as Kiev's persecution of ethnic Russians in Donbas, and thus "provoked" Russia to intervene militarily in Ukraine to "liberate" Donbas, which had a population of 58% ethnic Ukrainians in Luhansk Oblast and 56.9% in Donetsk Oblast, while ethnic Russians accounted for approximately 38-39% in each, (according to a 2001 census). In the West, we believe that the West merely supported Ukraine's popular uprisings, in the Ukrainian people's attempts at self-determination and their ambition to become a Western-style democracy and join the EU. In the West's eyes, it was Russia that unleashed a war in Ukraine, and this is seen as a land grab and as an attempt to subjugate Ukraine. It is also seen as a violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and as a violation of its territorial integrity and the UN Charter. The West sees itself as aiding Ukraine to defend itself from its neighbor's aggression and defend itself from potential Russian aggression against NATO countries. How can we reconcile these irreconcilable perspectives?
