Matthew Tkachuk and Brady Tkachuk both agreed that if they were on the Maple Leafs while Auston Matthews was hit by Radko Gudas, there’s no way they wouldn’t have gotten ejected sticking up for him: “Anytime something happens to your best player or captain, there has to be some sort of response. You shouldn’t have to fight for every clean hit, but if something dirty happens or a guy gets hurt, you deal with it right away. At that point, it’s not even about the points in the standings. Sticking up for your teammate matters more in a game like that. I don’t know, I think Brady and I are pretty old school in the way we think, but if we were on the Leafs, we probably wouldn’t have lasted that game without being in a scrum after every whistle. But we lose Game 7… in a non-enjoyable way of all time, probably. I get home… I’m pretty disappointed, devastated. The thought also of it being my last Maple Leaf game at home. And then I get a phone call, probably five or so minutes after, from my wife’s father. He goes, ‘I just want to let you know we’ve got people sending us screenshots of a guy posting your address online, saying if people want to come pay us a visit and say their goodbyes in a quotation way… here’s the address.’ It’s a little tough, obviously. Auston Matthews described visiting the White House yesterday as a huge honor for him and his teammates, becoming the first U.S. hockey team to win gold in 46 years. He made it clear he is not very political, but viewed the invitation as a great honor regardless of who is in office and hopes moments like this can help bring the country closer together: “We’re proud Americans, and doing something like that, winning a gold medal and representing your country, it felt like a special honor to be invited. I mean, it’s an honor. So it was pretty neat to go there, see everything, and just kind of share that experience with everybody. I don’t like to get political or get into that kind of stuff. Like I said, we’re proud Americans, and winning a gold medal, especially since it’s been 46 years since the men’s ice hockey team has done that, means a lot. I wrote an article earlier this week, lamenting about Keith Pelley openly stating his preference to 'retool' before conducting the search for the next General Manager. "I’ll never understand why he tipped his hand back in March, immediately after firing Brad Treliving. According to Pelley, the team interviewed 27 candidates for the head of hockey operations. What an incredible, unrepeatable opportunity to survey 27 of the sharpest executives in the NHL on what the Leafs truly need to win, free of preconceived notions. With the franchise at a genuine crossroads, wouldn’t you want unfiltered feedback? What if 24 of those 27 candidates believed a full rebuild was necessary? By telegraphing the preferred direction upfront, the organization contaminated the process. Some candidates inevitably molded their pitches to fit what Keith Pelley wanted to hear. Valuable, honest information was lost." For all the same reasons, it was refreshing to hear John Chayka take the opposite approach when responding to questions about what he’s looking for in the next head coach this afternoon. REALLY special opening statement by P.J. Fleck (worth the ENTIRE listen): - Wore this blue wristband, our community has been through a lot, that’s why Heather and I love it here so much…today was a special win, we had Fletcher’s 3 buddies, and his brother join us yesterday from the Annunciation shooting. Fletcher (Merkel) was one of the young people that lost his life. Their Dads came and spent a lot of time with us yesterday. - One of Fletcher’s greatest memories was the USC game last year, which was talked about his funeral. - It’s the most unthinkable, tragic, catastrophic feeling you probably could ever have, losing your child. - Mike Wierzbicki did a tremendous job of hosting them, and bringing them into our family - They all got a game ball, kids are really resilient, but we don’t know how that will really impact young people - This is what Row The Boat is all about. Can’t bring Fletcher back, can’t make it easier, but I hope that for 45 minutes in my office, for pre-game, to that locker room, they could smile, and I thought they did. - This goes way bigger than football, everybody. I get paid to win, but I understand my role as a head football coach, I understand the obligation I have, the job I have to do and who I represent. - People can say Row The Boat is corny, it’s 13 years everybody, move on, find a new word, almost 100 wins…corny? It’s never give up. It’s what we just talked about with Team Fletcher, if you’re going to call that corny, you have issues and problems. - What our team showed tonight was resolve and the resiliency of what RTB is all about. I’m so darn proud of them. What I should have followed. After the holidays as I’m a brokie as the legend Andrew Tate say I’m going to need help by the Twitter lawyers after the holiday season to help out. I’m recording this about 17 minutes before I hop on a zoom call so what’s your watching here? It’s a lot of what you’re watching. I think most importantly what you’re seeing is me having a good time and enjoying myself I’ve been really paying attention to that you know I can be so formulated formulaic strategic just because of you know the muscle memory of being an artist and a professional that sometimes I forget to you know, laughing and have a good time so the top of the year has been very consistent. You know we talked about the optimism you have come January 1 here we are in March. I’m not sure the date but we’re in March now almost in the first quarter and I’ve been working every single day. I’ve been living every single day but two weeks ago I got sick and I don’t know if it was allergies or whatever or something that was just going around because a few of my collaborators also was out and are still out to this to this day but everyone’s good everyone’s getting rest but that break really jolted me and scared me just how when I take the weekends off to go and live I always have this thought of when I go back on Monday do I still have it? Am I still in that mode that I’ve been feeling? the answer to that question is yes and I say that to say there’s this Producer, who I found on TikTok just because I love keeping my ear to the streets. It’s not good on the back and you shouldn’t keep your ear to the street for too long because it’ll make your back hurt, but it’s worth the pain. I promise you, but I found this Producer and the captain was. I’m making a beat every day and if I miss a day I quit and I sell all of my equipment. I’ve been in the search of just new production. I’m looking for a new bounces of drums and I feel like the youth is where it’s always gonna be at. I take pride in pointing at people who may not have the experience or anything yet but that doesn’t mean that you you don’t have what it takes to change the world or the Sonic’s so I reached out to trippy and I told him yo I’ve been looking for help on drums and swings I’m gonna nerd out for you but like I’m kind of getting tired of hearing the snare on the two and four or a repetitive high hat patterns and what I seen when I seen trvpyyy post well what I heard rather with someone who was taking liberties and swings and bounces, so I shot my shot in DM them got his number and we hopped on a FaceTime call and he told me his name was trippy and immediately I started smiling from the inside and out because I have a friend by the name of trippy who very early on took the chance to say yo I like what you doing I want you to get a front seat of what it’s like to be a superstar and also what it’s like to show love and be a friend and pour into someone so recording this now healthy me and Jason are back in the gym. We had a very strong week I had a very exciting week of being outside and just being with friends and loved ones Lotta late nights but we make sure we still get up in the morning and hit our 3 mile run or our leg days, upper body or full body . The weekends are usually my time to rest and live, but I’m recording live now from the studio excited and ready to play and Jam just because I genuinely love what I do there’s a lot That’s about to happen in a great way actually coming up this week and I’m excited for that but I’m even more excited to have a great time and just have a blast I’m so thankful I’m so present.
