I’d be curious to see this kind of research for MMA. I would imagine the system might come across interesting and novel submission moves, unexpected fake outs, discover unexploited weaknesses and strange ways of leveraging the human form for combat, etc.

Two-handed backhand needs some work. Also forehands could use the same adjustment. Namely to take the racquet back higher and then drop it down into place (rather than the low take back).

I think this would allow for training in VR, where previously unscalable, now any significant set of high quality video should allow for improved human training. Everyone can afford a 1-on-1 tutor at the highest level in any sport.

Self Toss short-hop feeds drill. 1 hop and 2 hop variations. Ball hit at you, declared backhands and glove side picks. A player can get a lot of reps in a very small space. Keys: in order to be on time to the short hop, the toss can’t be too far out front, too low or too fast. You have to start low, play low and move low (with precision feet). Why? Everything happens really fast, especially 1 hop rep variation. If you are late, you get an in-between hop. Really late and/or very lazy feet … you get a big hop. We are not working fielding either of those hops in this drill. Be on time to the short hop. Another key: On ball tossed directly in front (grounder at you) it prevents exaggerated “rounding off” the ball. Not enough time before ball hits the earth and you have to be there on time to the 1” hop. This creates a much more realistic game like rep and approach to the ball. We use a line in video to show how the alignment works. Notice how he is set up with left ear near the line. He is “preset” as far off center as he would need to get on a game rep. Left ear or left shoulder is as far off center as you ever need to get to read speed and hops at ball hit right at you. (Left handed throwers are opposite ear). If you do this drill with baseballs and a target on a net, you can finish the play with a throw and follow. Really creative and you can do this same self feed drill or your own variation to work on your double play “feeds” or slow rollers. Another variation is throwing a ball off a wall. But walls are not always available. Especially when using a baseball. We are using a tennis ball in this video. Dirt Bro Baseball

AI TENNIS ANALYSIS. A FULL COMPUTER VISION SYSTEM. BUILT ON YOLO, PYTORCH, AND KEYPOINT EXTRACTION. Take any tennis match broadcast, any camera angle, any resolution. Feed it into the pipeline. YOLO detects both players and the tennis ball frame by frame. No manual labeling, no pre-annotated dataset. A fine-tuned YOLOv5 model trained on a Roboflow tennis ball dataset handles the ball - the hardest object to track in any sport. Tiny, fast, constantly occluded. The model finds it anyway. Trackers maintain identity across frames so Player 1 stays Player 1 from the first serve to match point. But detection is just the start. A ResNet50 CNN trained in PyTorch predicts court keypoints from every frame - the corners, service lines, baselines, net posts. Fourteen points that define the entire playing surface geometry. From those keypoints the system builds a homography matrix and warps the broadcast perspective into a top-down mini court with real coordinates. Now every player has a position in real space, not pixel space. Every frame becomes a measurement. Every rally becomes a dataset. Player movement speed - calculated from position deltas between frames, converted to meters per second through the homography. Ball shot speed - measured from the ball trajectory across consecutive detections. Number of shots per rally - counted automatically through ball direction changes. All of this rendered live on the video as an overlay. A mini court in the corner showing both players as dots moving in real time. Stats updating after every point. OpenCV handles the rendering. Pandas handles the math. PyTorch handles the intelligence. YOLO handles the eyes. No Hawkeye subscription, no court-embedded sensors, no tracking chips in the ball. A Python script, a trained model, and a GPU. The full code is on GitHub. The tutorial walks through every module - from ball detector training to court keypoint extraction to the final statistical overlay. Professional teams used to need broadcast deals and proprietary hardware for this kind of analysis. Now you build it in an afternoon with open-source tools. 🚨 BREAKING: Microsoft's first robotics foundation model! 🤯 Microsoft just announced Rho-alpha (ρα), their first robotics model derived from the Phi series of vision-language models. Rho-alpha translates natural language commands into control signals for robotic systems performing bimanual manipulation tasks. Commands like "push the green button with the right gripper," "pull out the red wire," "flip the top switch on," or "turn the knob to position 5" get executed directly by dual-arm robots. What makes this different from standard vision-language-action (VLA) models is the additional modalities. Rho-alpha is a VLA+ model that adds tactile sensing to the perceptual mix, with plans to incorporate force feedback. On the learning side, the model is designed to continually improve during deployment by learning from human feedback. The training approach combines trajectories from physical demonstrations and simulated tasks with web-scale visual question answering data. Since teleoperation data is scarce and expensive, Microsoft is using NVIDIA Isaac Sim on Azure to generate physically accurate synthetic datasets via reinforcement learning. These simulated trajectories get combined with commercial and open physical demonstration datasets. The model is currently under evaluation on dual-arm setups and humanoid robots. Microsoft is opening an Early Access Program for organizations interested in evaluating Rho-alpha. Robots that can adapt to dynamic situations and human preferences are more useful in real environments and more trusted by the people operating them. Hexagons and Octagons Those who follow football and coaching will be well aware that there are trends that emerge and become the great break through in coaching, only to vanish quite quickly. A few stick around and become a staple. Such as the rondo, or the 4v4+4 Guardiola rondo variation. One that did not stick around in the coaching collective consciousness that possible should have was Thomas Tuchel’s use of hexagonal and octagonal playing areas in training sessions. Tuchel explained that cutting off the corners and angling the pitch forced “sharp diagonal” passes that would help break the press. The positioning of players outside the hexagon/octagon or players close to the edges will be manipulated into an open body shape by the angles of the pitch. Players are impacted by environmental constraints and embodied cognition, where the geography of the playing area influences their actions. This influence spreads to the creation of triangles and diamonds within the playing area due to the “funnel” like nature of the playing area. We can use the cut outside angles by placing bounce or target players on the exterior, influencing the movement and organisation internally. The inside players will not have to move wide as those areas are occupied. The internal players will seek to create passing angles using the positioning of the outside players and their internal team mates. The diamonds and triangles will appear. If we leave the spaces on the outside empty players can move to fill the spaces. These act as free spaces to receive from the goalkeeper or open spaces for attackers to overlap into, encouraging attacking combination play and crosses. A different way of using the space is to remove goals and goalkeepers from the ends and place bounce/target players on the outside. Players now can combine with the outside players, when they do so they are then free to finish into the outside goals. The condition can be extended to combining with the target player in the opposite side of the pitch before scoring, adding an element of switching play. The hexagon and octagon are versatile spaces that help to replicate aspects of the game. By funneling the spaces we impact players body shape, ability to play forward quickly, team shape (or small group shapes), players cutting in, defending centrally, the types of combination used and the angles of line breaking pass (diagonals). The angles are hugely significant for teams that value combinations and possession football, Straight passes and receiving angles are much easier to intercept and carry high risks for being counter attacked. Short diagonals can bypass players and attacking shapes, creating angled connections. If an angles pass is given away there is still a risk of being counter attacked but there is more chance of having players around the ball to regain possession. To counter press. The question that emerges is should we then be using hexagons and octagons more? If they are of greater benefit than squares and rectangles, why use them? Should all pitches, including those of a small sided nature be hexagonal? Can the rondo square be replaced by the rondo octagon?

Cameron Young is playing with a golf ball that would allegedly be compliant with the new roll back rules that will come into effect in a few years time. He was asked about it ahead of the PGA Championship and he says every player in the game is sacrificing distance for control, and he put it in play at the Wyndham last year which he won. “I think I put it in play the same reason that everybody else plays the ball that they play. I hit it during a ball test, one of the Titleist facilities probably close to two years ago and didn't know anything about it and just kind of say, hey, what's that one? Because I liked the flight. “Then as things progressed, I was able to test it last year at Wyndham, able to put that in play, and it's been there since. “Obviously there is no conforming list. I wasn't aware that it would have -- I suppose I read something that said it passed that test, but I wasn't aware of that until very recently. “So at no point was that a consideration. It was just really me trying to optimize my golf, and it's the ball that seems to work the best for me.” He then was asked whether he lost distance with it compared to other balls he’s tested: “Not particularly. I don't think any of us are out really here playing the ball that goes the farthest. I think you'd struggle to find a single person that's doing that. We're all sacrificing a certain amount of things that we feel are worth it, control with irons, control with wedges. For me, that's the biggest thing is being able to control spin, and this is the ball that does the best for me.” Finally he can as asked whether this ball goes further than the one he was using: “No, I hit very similar, yeah. It's much more -- the driver is kind of the easiest thing to deal with, I feel like. For me to get it where it needed to be, I had to just add a little bit of spin, and it kind of comes out at a perfectly playable range. “For me, the biggest thing, like I said, is the irons. This ball is easier to control with the irons. It doesn't spin as much, and it just allows me to be better with my distance control just because it's more consistent.” The golf ball rollback has been a hugely controversial subject but Cameron Young is currently using one that’s compliant and he is playing the best golf of his career. This World Cup has shown how Argentinian players are just built different, and it was interesting because, in the press conferences, both managers addressed this. First, Tuchel talks about the Argentinian value of the ball and how they protect the ball at all costs, how they manage those small spaces, and how they learn this from a young age. He references culture, and this is exactly it. A child playing in a certain environment leads to that. Not every Argentinian child is on the national team, but it raises the ceiling. It creates a certain type of style and a certain type of player. Then Scaloni also references his culture. He sees them play without fear of losing. It comes from playing in an environment where you are constantly faced with the potential of losing and being able to play with that pressure, right? They don’t fight against it. They play with it. They use it. And I think this is where youth football coaches should really take note. This does not mean we should copy and paste Argentinian culture into every training environment, because culture cannot just be copied. But the values within that culture can be inculcated in every training environment. The value of the ball. The courage to receive it in small spaces. The ability to protect it under pressure. The confidence to keep playing after a mistake. The willingness to play with the possibility of losing rather than constantly trying to avoid it. Those values can become part of the environment we create every day. They can be present in the games we design, in what we praise, in what we allow players to struggle with, and in how we respond when they lose the ball. If every mistake leads to the coach stopping the session, giving the answer, or taking the pressure away, then players never learn to play with that pressure. They learn to wait for the coach. It was cool to see how two managers, at such a big stage, reference culture and the environments that kids play in when they’re young. Because the players we see on the biggest stage were not only created by tactics or coaching information. They were created by environments that taught them what to value, how to relate to the ball, and how to play when there was something to lose.
