@othatsraspberry @DollWantTweet Why do people think that people in their 40’s now consider a geezer or a hag when they’re not?

Ben Horowitz tells the story of Slack’s pivot from a failed gaming app into a $28 billion company Ben recalls investing in Stewart Butterfield’s new company Tiny Speck. In 2001, Stewart began building an online game, pivoted into Flickr, and the company was acquired by Yahoo in 2005 for $25 million. In early 2009, Stewart decided he wanted to try building the online game again. This time, it would be called Glitch. Ben tells the story: “And so he builds Glitch. I love Glitch - it was a marvelous game. But it had two major problems. One, he started it in 2006 and built on Flash before Steve Jobs declared war on Flash. So it wasn’t going to work on the iPhone. And then the other problem was people would finish the game in two days, and so that’s not very good for retention.” After raising more than $15 million to build Glitch, Stewart called Ben to tell his investor that they only had $6 million left: “Ben, I’ve got $6 million left. I have no way to raise money because I’ve made really no progress because of these issues. It’s going to cost me more than $6 million to finish the game. So I’ve got three choices. I can pray for rain and try and finish it. I can shut down the company and give you your $6 million back. Or we build this tool that we use in our engineering team to communicate with each other and make engineering work a little better, and I could just put that out as a product.” Ben replies: “What? You just like built some tool to talk to each other and you want to put that out as a product? And you’re a consumer guy and you want to become an enterprise software guy?” Stewart says, “Yeah, I think it’d be a pretty good idea.” And so Ben said, “$6 million isn’t going to make a big difference in my life. If you really think it’s a good idea and you want to do that, go ahead.” Stewart decided to call the new product Slack, and it soon became the fastest growing enterprise software company of all time before SalesForce acquired it for $27.7 billion in July 2021. Ben points out an important lesson here: “A lot of the process is do you have a secret? Do you know something that nobody else knows? And because [Stewart] was pulling his hair out, literally smoking 8 packs of cigarettes a day, trying to get Glitch out the door, he was doing everything to optimize that development, and so he learned where software development was suboptimal… And that’s a really big key. You have to do something really hard if you want to learn something about the world that nobody else knows or is acting on. That’s when you have a breakthrough. But it starts with hard work.” Video source: UC Berkeley SCET (2020)

Our Battle Angel Alita cosplay will be on display from tomorrow this weekend at London Comic Con Winter at Olympia, November 16-17. I’ve set her all up to run on an ESP32 microprocessor powering an OLED display that shows the #smartdoll protocol boot sequence. The setup also includes pulsating lights that bring the cyber shell to life. For the past 10 years, whenever folks asked, “What’s so ‘smart’ about Smart Doll?” I’d share the story of how it all started as an April Fools’ joke that went viral. Back then, “Smart Doll” was imagined as a doll that could do your homework and even had built-in flamethrowers. The name stuck—almost as if it chose us—and it became an ongoing challenge to address, given the lack of any “smart” functionality. It’s a question I’ve been inspired to tackle in new ways ever since. ;-) But times have changed. Now, when people ask the same question, I simply reply, “What do you want them to do?” Until now, folks have used the Smart Doll platform to express creativity through our diverse collection of body shapes and skin tones. But Smart Doll is evolving—continuing to be a canvas for imagination while becoming a platform for innovation and limitless possibilities. With Cyber Shell Cortex, we’ve come full circle. Designed as a customizable shell for DIY enthusiasts, it allows folks to pair their Smart Doll with sensors, servo motors, and other modules, transforming them into an IoT-enabled companion capable of connecting to APIs like ChatGPT or IFTTT to control home appliances and more. For the first time, Smart Doll can truly live up to its name, limited only by the physical space inside and the creativity of those who dare to make it their own. There’s still work to do—like redesigning the spine to create more internal space for rechargeable batteries, modules, and servomotors. I’m also exploring motorized body panels that can open automatically—features that require retooling molds. While it’ll take some time before the release, I believe it will be worth the wait. Once the classic body is complete, my next goal is to Cortexify the Pear Body. More photos on the site

All the tributes I've read about the dearly departed got me thinking about how, a lot of times, we wait until the funeral to give people their flowers... instead of while they are still alive to smell them. So, I want to be intentional about appreciating people who have had a profound influence and impact on my life while they are here. Today, I want to celebrate one of my mentors, Egbon Leke Alder. I'm a fiend for wisdom, and you would be hard pressed to find a mind wiser than his on this planet. My wife and I are convinced that he uses more of his brain power than most human beings. His intelligence is divine, his creativity is sublime, and his kindness? Truly, one of a kind. He is a genius in every sense of the word. When we were planning our campaign, I knew I had to "sit at his feet." I had no idea he was battling illness because he always found time to meet with my team and I repeatedly. He gave us counsel, strategy, and wisdom - the kind that even if you could put a price on it, we could never afford to pay. I didn't end up winning the election, but spending quality time with one of the greatest minds in Nigerian history? That's a win every single time and a personal highlight in my life. Egbon, I can offer you nothing but the prayers of a grateful heart. May God continue to prosper, protect, and preserve you. May He give you the desires of your heart and reward you for me. May the rest of your years be the best of them, and may the peace that passes all understanding guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Thank you for believing in me, Sir. I hope to one day repay your faith by what I do and who I become, by the grace of God. Also, please buy his book.
