Kuttan a Toda tribesman sits proudly among the blooming Neelakurinji flowers in Nilgiris. Flowers of Neelkurinji bloom once in 12 years cycle. It is said that Nilgiris gets its name due to the magical blue hue imparted by these stunning flowers. Neelakurinji Strobilanthes kunthiana has most recently been assessed for The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2024 and listed as Vulnerable emphasising the need for its conservation. Ideally, infrastructure projects should never intrude into wildlife habitats. But in unavoidable circumstances, the challenge lies in minimizing the impact, and making it safer for wildlife. Recently a herd of 15 elephants was seen using a specially constructed overpass, part of the Kharsiya-Dharamjaigarh East Railway Project in Chattisgarh. Designed to offer safe passage across railway tracks, this initiative shows how thoughtful planning can help. #wildlifeconservation video courtesy- shared #elephants

But this is becoming the new normal across Uttarakhand’s hills. Imagine if a child had stepped outside, or someone had walked into the courtyard in the dark. Human-wildlife conflict is no longer a warning. It is a reality unfolding outside people’s homes. Before the next sighting turns into the next tragedy, we need answers, not just alerts.

A homeowner living in Monrovia is no stranger to wildlife, but she was recently visited by an unprecedented number of animals in one night. Angie Jolly checked her Ring camera one morning and discovered her home had been visited by a bear, followed by a skunk and then a bobcat. “We love admiring our beautiful wildlife here in the foothills,” Jolly said. “It’s important for people to be aware of the variety that is up here.”

How it started and how it is going ! Declared in 1940 as India’s first wildlife sanctuary, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve is a thriving Tiger Reserve. With a total area of 688.59 sq. km and forming part of the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve, it now supports an estimated 165 tigers (2024-25), up from 129 in 2023-24. It is also home to 131 leopards, 534 elephants, and 19 striped hyenas, making it a biodiversity hotspot. As the highest tiger density area in Tamil Nadu, Mudumalai plays a vital role in wildlife dispersal between the Eastern and Western Ghats, anchoring South India’s conservation landscape.
