The 1990s were a time when SNK and Capcom were fiercely competing to bring their arcade games to home consoles. Capcom kept upgrading its hardware from CPS1 to CPS3, while SNK stuck with a single platform—the Neo Geo—which was powerful enough to keep receiving new releases from 1990 all the way to 2004. Because of that, many SNK games ported to 8-bit and 16-bit consoles often suffered in quality. However, the PC Engine, despite being an 8-bit system, managed to deliver surprisingly strong ports of SNK games thanks to the power of CD technology. If SNK had the Neo Geo AES, Capcom had the CPS Changer. Both were designed to let people enjoy arcade games at home, but unlike the AES, the CPS Changer wasn’t really built as a traditional home console from the ground up. In many ways, it felt more like an official supergun made by Capcom themselves. It even supported the Super Famicom CPS Fighter stick. A lot of people had the chance to experience MVS hardware thanks to the AES, but the CPS Changer was much rarer, so not many people ever got to see one in person. When you first connect it to a TV, the controller gives off a bit of a Super Famicom vibe, but once the game starts, the polished graphics and incredible sound immediately make it clear that you’re basically playing real arcade hardware at home.

Metal Slug 4 often gets a lot of criticism, but if you look at it separately from Metal Slug 1–3, it’s not actually a bad game. The stylish BGM that starts right from Stage 1 is excellent, and the Double Heavy Machine Gun was a really cool addition. That said, the biggest drawback is that the game feels very familiar—almost like you’ve seen it all before—which is hard to ignore while playing. In Korea, it was released around the time when arcades were disappearing due to the rise of PC cafe, so not many people actually had the chance to experience this game back then.

Looking back now, it’s an incredible game where almost all of Metal Gear’s core systems were already fully formed, but it was far too difficult to play at such a young age, so I remember trading it for another game before getting very far.

I think a lot of people were introduced to Final Fantasy starting from 7. Since it was released on the PlayStation and became a huge global success, it naturally gained widespread recognition. But among older players, many still remember just how popular 6 was when it came out on the Super Famicom. Personally, Chrono Trigger was an incredible game as well, but compared to the impact that Final Fantasy 6 had on me, it felt slightly less overwhelming. Especially when I listen to that opening theme, I still get chills to this day.

Although Guy was missing and two-player co-op wasn’t supported, the mere fact that we could play Final Fight at home felt like a blessing in itself. Looking back now, the Super Famicom version was released in December 1990, when the system’s maximum cartridge size was 8 megabits (1 megabyte). Considering that the arcade version had more than twice that amount of data, it seems clear that these limitations led to those difficult compromises. Beat ’em up games were already popular in arcades before Final Fight, but after its release, the genre truly boomed, eventually leading to Capcom’s finest belt-scrolling action titles—culminating in Dungeons & Dragons, the pinnacle of their beat ’em up legacy.

The King of Fighters 2003 was the last entry released on the Neo Geo platform, and NeoWave became the first KOF title to move to the Atomiswave hardware. It feels like SNK made it mainly to test the new arcade board, because the game comes across as surprisingly low-effort. Back then, the Atomiswave hardware was expensive, so very few arcades had it, which means not many people actually got the chance to play NeoWave. I’ve even wondered if that’s why the next game was called The King of Fighters XI. Technically, it was the twelfth main entry in the series, yet SNK skipped “XII” for the numbering at that point. It almost feels as if they wanted to pretend NeoWave never happened.

Let me introduce Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (arcade game), a game I had an absolute blast playing in arcades when I was a kid. Back then, Konami was making a lot of belt-scrolling action games using various IPs, and this title was a huge hit. It was also ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System, and the arcade feel was recreated surprisingly well, which made it very popular. Even today, it’s still incredibly fun to play 👌

There were three Capcom games that always made me think, “Why was this never released on consoles?” Those games were The Punisher, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, and Alien vs. Predator. Thankfully, The Punisher was included in Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, so it can finally be enjoyed on modern consoles. But the other two are still unavailable due to licensing issues. Hopefully, those problems get resolved someday so they can also be released on modern consoles.

PC Engine’s Street Fighter II’ Dash was something I first encountered while collecting, and it genuinely surprised me. The fact that such a game could fit on a tiny HuCard was impressive in itself, and the actual gameplay didn’t feel lacking at all—even when compared to the Super Famicom or the Mega Drive versions. I also tried playing it on the PC Engine GT. The screen was decent enough to be playable, but the controls were almost impossible. With Start, Select, and Buttons I and II already taking up both hands, you’re basically forced to use three fingers, and then use your foot to hit the button that switches the remaining attacks. Trying to play Street Fighter like that is honestly absurd.

Because of that, it wasn’t the massive leap that Model 3 had been, but it still ended up getting a huge variety of games from not only Sega, but many other companies as well. Popular titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Capcom vs. SNK 2 were also NAOMI-based games. What was disappointing, though, was the irony that Virtua Fighter 4 never came to the Dreamcast and was instead released on the PlayStation 2.

Personally, I didn’t like Alpha 3 because it felt too complicated. I played it a lot in arcades, but I think I played it the most on the PlayStation 1. Do you like this game?

March 7, 1991 was the day the arcade version of Street Fighter II appeared, and this year marks its 35th anniversary. It was the game that sparked the fighting game boom. I first learned about the existence of the Super Famicom through the news that Street Fighter II was coming to it. By the way, it’s really funny that the back of the Korean release of Street Fighter II shows screenshots from Final Fight instead of the actual game. 😄
