I used to play Street Fighter II all the time, but the first time I saw Art of Fighting, the visual impact was unbelievable. The characters filled the entire screen, fighting with overwhelming intensity. And when the distance between them increased, the screen would dynamically zoom out — that effect felt absolutely revolutionary at the time. It was stunning. On top of that, the facial damage system was incredibly realistic. The more you got hit, the more your character’s face would swell and bruise. It added a level of immersion that I had never experienced before. And did you know? The concept of the “super move” was first introduced in Art of Fighting. That was the legendary Ryuko Ranbu. When your life gauge was almost empty, you could unleash it and turn the tide of battle in a single moment. That comeback mechanic felt amazing. Oh, and if I remember correctly, this was also the very first “100 Mega Shock” game. The game was later ported to the SNES, Sega Genesis, and PC Engine CD. Among them, the PC Engine version was surprisingly faithful to the arcade original.

At the time, rumors were circulating that the game would be ported to PC, so when it was suddenly announced for the Super Famicom, it came as a huge shock. Although Guy was missing and two-player co-op wasn’t supported, the mere fact that we could play Final Fight at home felt like a blessing in itself. Looking back now, the Super Famicom version was released in December 1990, when the system’s maximum cartridge size was 8 megabits (1 megabyte). Considering that the arcade version had more than twice that amount of data, it seems clear that these limitations led to those difficult compromises. Beat ’em up games were already popular in arcades before Final Fight, but after its release, the genre truly boomed, eventually leading to Capcom’s finest belt-scrolling action titles—culminating in Dungeons & Dragons, the pinnacle of their beat ’em up legacy.

Ever since I bought an arcade cabinet, I’ve become really interested in arcade games. Similar to console games, you can buy arcade game PCBs and run them by connecting them directly. Capcom games are a bit unique in that they use a six-button layout, so they require a separate connector, but aside from that, the setup is surprisingly simple. You can also play these games through emulators, but the feeling of enjoying them on real hardware is something else entirely. Super Street Fighter II was the first game for Capcom’s arcade system, CPS2, and compared to CPS1, both the graphics and sound were significantly improved.

I think the hidden command culture for selecting secret characters in arcades probably started with Akuma in Super Street Fighter II X. Not long after the game was released, rumors started spreading around arcades that some people had actually managed to pick Akuma. Then one day, at the arcade I used to visit all the time, I saw someone actually playing as him. I was so shocked that after the match ended, I asked him how to select Akuma. He told me he’d teach me… for 500 won. In the end, I paid the money with tears in my eyes and learned the legendary command. 🤣 Ryu → T. Hawk → Guile → Cammy → Ryu, staying on each character for one second, then hold the Start button and press all punch buttons at the same time.

If I had to pick one of the greatest PC Engine games, this title simply can’t be left out: Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. Even considering that it was released in 1993, it’s still praised for its incredible level of polish, with outstanding graphics, sound, opening sequence, voice acting, controls, and multiple branching paths. The CD format played a huge role in making all of that possible, which naturally made it stand out compared to competing consoles at the time like the Super Famicom and Mega Drive. If you ever get the chance, it’s definitely a game worth playing at least once.

All you had to do was beat your rival, but they would chase you so closely that the tension was incredible. When you win a race, you can use the prize money to upgrade your car, and with the variety of tracks, it never gets boring. Street Fighter Zero (Alpha) 2 was the most popular entry in the series. Compared to the first game, it had much better balance, and the additional characters made it far more appealing. Personally, I didn’t like Alpha 3 because it felt too complicated. I played it a lot in arcades, but I think I played it the most on the PlayStation 1. Do you like this game?

The X68000 was one of the best home computers for enjoying classic Konami and Capcom arcade games. Its hardware was so powerful that, aside from the Neo Geo, it was virtually the only system capable of delivering near-perfect arcade conversions at the time. Unfortunately, it was extremely expensive and sold exclusively in Japan, so very few people ever had the chance to experience it. Even today, decades after its release, the quality of its games is still incredibly impressive. Ghouls ’n Ghosts is a perfect example. Compared to the Mega Drive and PC Engine versions, the X68000 port is on an entirely different level in terms of accuracy and overall quality. It’s still amazing to think that a game this good could fit on just two floppy disks.

When I heard Daytona USA was coming to the Sega Saturn, I sold all my other consoles and saved up for it. Finally got the Saturn and Daytona running at home—total mind-blow 🤯. Sure, it wasn’t quite arcade-perfect, but just being able to play it at home was enough. By the time Dreamcast came around, the port was almost flawless. Fun fact: Saturn was almost done as a 2D machine, but after seeing PlayStation’s 3D power, Sega tweaked it late—3D performance ended up a bit lacking. Irony is, the same Sega that pioneered 3D with Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter thought consoles weren’t ready yet.

At the time, their performance was so impressive that other 3D games simply couldn’t compare. Because of that, it was extremely difficult to accurately reproduce these games on home consoles. In the early 1990s, the Model 1 arcade hardware cost close to $7,000, and even Sega’s own systems—the Mega Drive, 32X, and later the Sega Saturn—struggled to deliver arcade-perfect versions. Back then, I was disappointed by the gap in quality between the arcade and home versions. Looking back now, though, it’s amazing that Sega managed to port them as well as they did. It almost feels like a miracle. After eventually buying an arcade cabinet and a Model 1 board, I learned something I hadn’t realized before: Model 1 supported high-resolution monitors, unlike the standard displays used by most home systems. In those days, the average gamer didn’t even think about screen resolution, so seeing Virtua Fighter on a high-resolution arcade monitor created a fundamentally different experience from the home versions. It was a 3rd down play and it was Brandon Aiyuk over the middle. We call it Gucci. It was a 6 step slant, cross the nickel’s face. It was man to man coverage, and it was on time. I threw it on plant, BA turned at the right time. It was tight coverage. DB reached across. We got the ball there and it was a diving catch. I was like 'Bro', boom we get the first down. We’re staying on the field. From there we won the game. We won the NFC Championship game after that. We got to the Super Bowl, but it was that play.
