The PC Engine was so expensive in the late ’80s and early ’90s that it was hard to find even in the homes of well-off friends. On top of that, it had one of the first CD-ROM add-ons, which made it feel incredibly high-tech at the time. Because of its larger storage capacity, many arcade games were ported to it, and the CD-quality audio was absolutely amazing. The real issue, though, was the price. You had to buy everything separately—the PC Engine itself, the CD interface (docking unit), the CD-ROM drive, the system card, and the game CDs.

Fatal Fury Special was ported to the PC Engine CD, and at that level, it’s fair to call it an almost perfect conversion. The X68000 was one of the best home computers for enjoying classic Konami and Capcom arcade games. Its hardware was so powerful that, aside from the Neo Geo, it was virtually the only system capable of delivering near-perfect arcade conversions at the time. Unfortunately, it was extremely expensive and sold exclusively in Japan, so very few people ever had the chance to experience it. Even today, decades after its release, the quality of its games is still incredibly impressive. Ghouls ’n Ghosts is a perfect example. Compared to the Mega Drive and PC Engine versions, the X68000 port is on an entirely different level in terms of accuracy and overall quality. It’s still amazing to think that a game this good could fit on just two floppy disks.

Metal Slug 4 often gets a lot of criticism, but if you look at it separately from Metal Slug 1–3, it’s not actually a bad game. The stylish BGM that starts right from Stage 1 is excellent, and the Double Heavy Machine Gun was a really cool addition. That said, the biggest drawback is that the game feels very familiar—almost like you’ve seen it all before—which is hard to ignore while playing. In Korea, it was released around the time when arcades were disappearing due to the rise of PC cafe, so not many people actually had the chance to experience this game back then.

This is the Samsung Handy Gam Boy, the version of the Sega Game Gear that was imported and sold by Samsung in Korea. It’s one of the harder Samsung gaming systems to find, making it quite a challenge for collectors. Because of that, a fan produced a small batch of reproduction units. Even the box was faithfully recreated, and they went as far as reproducing the “Handy Gam Boy” branding on the console itself. I was never able to get an original one, so I’m really happy to have something like this to fill that gap in my collection. 😊

Even though it drained batteries quickly, its game quality was on a completely different level compared to the Game Boy. In reality, most people used rechargeable AA batteries or an AC adapter, so the battery issue wasn’t as big of a problem as many people think. The real issue was the price. I played Streets of Rage again recently, and it’s still a great game today.

Among all the games released on the PlayStation, I think Final Fantasy VII was truly the greatest. There had been cinematic games before, but the visual quality of this game was on a completely different level compared to anything that had come before it. Maybe this was also the moment when game developers first fell into the AAA trap, struggling with blockbuster-level development costs. Personally, Final Fantasy VII was the most visually shocking console game I had ever experienced.

I used to play Street Fighter II all the time, but the first time I saw Art of Fighting, the visual impact was unbelievable. The characters filled the entire screen, fighting with overwhelming intensity. And when the distance between them increased, the screen would dynamically zoom out — that effect felt absolutely revolutionary at the time. It was stunning. On top of that, the facial damage system was incredibly realistic. The more you got hit, the more your character’s face would swell and bruise. It added a level of immersion that I had never experienced before. And did you know? The concept of the “super move” was first introduced in Art of Fighting. That was the legendary Ryuko Ranbu. When your life gauge was almost empty, you could unleash it and turn the tide of battle in a single moment. That comeback mechanic felt amazing. Oh, and if I remember correctly, this was also the very first “100 Mega Shock” game. The game was later ported to the SNES, Sega Genesis, and PC Engine CD. Among them, the PC Engine version was surprisingly faithful to the arcade original.

The number of units sold was very limited, and today, surviving hardware is considered extremely rare.
