The PC Engine was actually so expensive that hardly anyone I knew had one back then. It was sometimes called the “Neo Geo of the 8-bit era” because of its high price. In terms of performance, it was arguably closer to the Super Famicom and Mega Drive, which came... a few years later, than to the NES and Sega Master System of the same era. Despite its powerful hardware, the console itself was surprisingly small and cute. And the HuCards, which looked like credit cards, were truly fascinating. I couldn’t believe that an entire game could fit onto such a tiny card. Back then, the PC Engine felt like a unicorn among game consoles to me. There was actually a HUGE difference between PC Engine and other 8 bit CPU systems of the era. The CPU was 8 bit indeed, but it was 4x faster than the one of the NES. And the GPU was indeed 16 bit, so it is basically a 16 bit gaming console.

In some ways it’s actually way faster than a Megadrive. The 6502 is a low-slung architecture with hyper-efficient cycle instructions. Despite being “only” 8 bits, it punches above its weight. At 7-odd MHz the 6502 is a beast more than most give it credit.

interestingly, it was more competitive with 16bit consoles in general, despite being closer to 8bit hardware in architecture. With PC engine CD ROM drive led to some of the best games of the "16-bit" generation! It put SEGA CD to shame.

Relatives gave me their C16 back then with tape, the bomb Jack and Airwolf games took around half an hour to load and you didn't know if it worked until that time elapsed 🤣There were apparently also games on cartridge for it, but never had one.
