For the 2026 Local Government Elections, the ANC undertook its most open, community-centred and rigorous candidate selection process yet. Ward councillor candidates were nominated by ANC branches and these were opened to the public, for people to vote for their preferred leadership, in their own communities. For mayors, the public nomination process allowed South Africans to put forward people they believed could govern, deliver and lead with integrity. It was a powerful reminder that when public transport is reliable, affordable, and safe, people will use it. Investing in rail infrastructure is an investment in economic growth, job creation, reduced traffic congestion, and safer, more connected communities. [WATCH] AROUND 150 OUT OF OVER 10 000 CANDIDATES ARE AFFECTED BUT THIS IS STILL SIGNIFICANT AS EVERY CANDIDATE COUNTS. This issue is affecting about 150 out of over 10 000 candidates submitted, but even that number is very significant to the ANC because our communities participated in the selection of those candidates and have a right to vote for them. We also aim to retain the municipalities that we govern and to ensure that we reclaim those that we are not governing. We want to ensure the program of services and transformation continue in South Africa. The ANC is the only party that contests all the wards on a VD by VD basis. [WATCH] AROUND 150 OUT OF OVER 10 000 CANDIDATES ARE AFFECTED BUT THIS IS STILL SIGNIFICANT AS EVERY CANDIDATE COUNTS. This issue is affecting about 150 out of over 10 000 candidates submitted, but even that number is very significant to the ANC because our communities participated in the selection of those candidates and have a right to vote for them. We also aim to retain the municipalities that we govern and to ensure that we reclaim those that we are not governing. We want to ensure the program of services and transformation continue in South Africa. The ANC is the only party that contests all the wards on a VD by VD basis. Every vote counts for the ANC so this will dent us if we do not take it up. Every municipality counts to ensure us that we fulfill our historical mission
