saving this for anyone who still thinks btc wastes energy
Electricity is what makes a new BTC impossible to fake. Add 10x the machines and difficulty rises until blocks still come every 10 minutes: same BTC per block, just more energy behind each one.
Good topic for newcomers. Energy is a real cost for miners, so the price of power, and things like oil that feed into it, shapes their margins, a bit like fuel costs for gold miners. What part surprised you most when you first learned it?
Same reason a vault pays for guards. Security was never free.
Energy trade-offs land better when the security model is explained without pretending electricity is free.
I now understand
half the miners i follow are flipping their power contracts to AI hosting lol. if that keeps going, does hashrate actually hold up after the 2028 halving?
Bitcoin doesn’t "waste" energy,it uses energy to anchor digital consensus to the laws of thermodynamics.
