I really don't get this attitude. Alberta is proposing a pipeline to the West Coast to export oil to overseas that will bring billions to Canada's economy and diversify our exports - both things that the Liberal government claims it wants to do but acting like it's not in national best interest and an Alberta thing. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson: "If Alberta wants to be a proponent for a pipeline, that's their right to do so. They need to meet the 5 criteria...when they will bring that project forward we will take a look where they are and evaluate it any other project. Tanker ban? It's hypothetical question." Why not be proactive and be part of the solution? They know that their red tape is what stands in the way and will not bring any confidence to the private sector.

Alberta is the last stand for Canada. I’m not Albertan so personally, I would rather they stay in Canada because I understand the detrimental effects that this will have on the country. That being said, it might need to be done. Not just for Alberta - but for Canada. We might have to disassemble this whole thing so we can build something new. Nothing is working here. Our constitution, our judicial system, our parliamentary system….it’s time for a change. Maybe Alberta leaving is exactly what Canada needs to wake up.

A guy in Calgary told me we’re not even allowed to discuss Alberta independence. Think about that. Apparently in Canada, we’re only allowed to talk about approved political topics. Then he said Alberta leaving Canada isn’t legal because one judge said the petition can’t be counted. So I asked him: If that decision was successfully appealed, would that change your mind? He said no. And that’s the whole point. For a lot of people, “it’s not legal” is not actually a legal argument. It’s just a talking point. The second the legal process doesn’t support them anymore, they still oppose it anyway. Quebec had two referendums. The Supreme Court already dealt with the issue of secession. But somehow when Alberta wants to even talk about it, people act like the conversation itself is forbidden. All the more reason for Alberta to quickly get off this dystopian train.

One of the most moving moments in Red Deer was talking to a kindly older woman standing on a busy street, waving an Alberta flag alongside a crowd of hundreds, and explaining exactly why she was there. I was in Rocky Mountain House recently for a massive pro Alberta independence rally. Hundreds of people were waving Alberta flags and driving around town, and I found a small group of about seven pro-Canada counter protesters and decided to engage them. One man challenged me. He said that if Alberta independence loses, I should give up. I told him plainly that yes, if we lose, I will respect the will of the voters. Then I asked him the same question back. If Alberta wins, will you accept it? He reluctantly said yes, but the moment I pressed him on what percentage he would accept, he would not even engage with the argument. He would not clearly accept a majority. That tells you a lot. For too many on the pro-Canada side, this is not really about democracy. It is about imposing their will on Albertans who disagree with them, then using shame and fear to pressure us into silence. The second part of his argument was that the independence movement is hurting investment in Alberta. My answer was that Ottawa already did that and we have nothing to loose. For years, federal policy has blocked pipelines, restricted market access, and damaged confidence in Alberta’s future. Then, when Albertans finally start pushing back, we are told that we are the problem. He even claimed there is no tanker ban. That is factually false. Canada’s Oil Tanker Moratorium Act does restrict large crude oil and persistent-oil tankers from stopping, loading, or unloading at ports on BC’s north coast. The details matter, but the broader point stands: Ottawa has put real barriers in the way of Alberta getting its resources to market. His response was basically, if that is true, then why is Alberta still so rich and prosperous? My answer was simple: because we work hard, we have a lot going for us, and it takes a lot to sink us. But that does not prove Canada is working. It proves Alberta is strong enough to keep carrying a country that keeps dragging us down.
