Let’s go for a spin! Yesterday (see below) I shared a little about why young children enjoy playing with - and in - boxes, noting that “enclosure” is one of 9 repetitive play patterns (or “play schema”) common to young children. This video was a great prompt to share... another: the ROTATION schema. As the name implies, children involved in rotational play are fascinated by things that spin, twist, and turn. They may enjoy spinning themselves in circles, making ramps for rolling toys, playing with gears… anything that turns and rotates. And yes, that includes the toilet paper roll… which is not only spinning but (like many activities in this category) teaching a cool lesson about cause and effect! Have you seen other examples of your child engaged in rotation play? (As an aside otherwise likely to be addressed in the replies, certain normal toddler behaviors repeated in excess can be red flags for autism. One of these is spinning [themselves] in circles, which for some children can be a self stimulating or “stimming” behavior. I will also note this little giggler's fine motor skills in that s/he can not only stand, spin the TP and giggle simultaneously, but s/he can also skillfully but loosely retain that binky while doing so.

I just adore how their whole bodies laugh. It’s almost an effort for the body to contain the laugh. I think it’s one of the most beautiful things, I wish I could laugh like this.❤️❤️

Where does a child’s delight in watching a thing be destroyed (like ripping up a piece of paper) come from? Once my sons laughed endlessly b/c I intentionally broke a pencil in front of them just to be silly. I’ve seen other kids respond joyfully to this kind of stimulus too.

Oh that delightful laugh! I don’t have a video but my eldest son would get that hysterical belly laugh watching a measuring tape be pulled out, press the button & it retracts!! Hysterical! Other son used to belly laugh with a door stopper being wiggled back & forth!🤣🤣

Shadows are an interesting phenomenon for young children - and can be a source of both fascination and fear. That’s because, like self-recognition in a mirror, research suggests that children don’t initially grasp the connection between themselves and their shadows - developing self recognition somewhere around three years of age. This can be scary for some toddlers as they walk outdoors and find themselves trailed by an inescapable companion. As for this little one, she’s clearly enjoying this interaction with her shadow and perhaps even recognizing that it is mirroring her own actions. While the two are often related, think of enclosure as creating a border around something, while enveloping involves covering or hiding it altogether. Does your little one want to hear the same book over and over and over again? The repetition can be a little maddening for us as parents, but for children it’s actually very beneficial. Favorite books are not only familiar and comforting, but support vocabulary growth and - importantly - your child’s own participation in the reading experience. I just love this video of little Theo and his mom as they read Eric Carle’s Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother Too? Not only can you tell it’s a book they’ve read together many times, but the familiar, repetitive pattern of the text itself allows Theo to play a role in the reading. Watch as he provides an enthusiastic “YES!” at the beginning of each page. (Note too what a good job he does at matching his “yes” response to the appropriate point in the text itself. It’s the first thing said after each page is turned.) As for vocabulary growth, repeated exposure to new words helps children to internalize vocabulary more rapidly with one study suggesting that children are more likely to incorporate new vocabulary from a book read three times than from three different books read one time apiece. Regular readers of my posts will know I’ve done whole series of posts about play schemas, which are predictable behavioral patterns common throughout toddlerhood. I love writing about them because the more we spot and name them, the less random and mysterious our toddlers’ behaviors become. Rest assured that toddlers aren’t the agents of chaos we sometimes perceive them to be. They’re actually using newfound skills to explore the world in a set of pretty predictable ways. It seems that nobody can quite settle on exactly how many of these schemas exist - in part because after a point we start talking about very subtle nuances between them - but I’ve written about 9 in the past. (Including two closely related patterns: Enclosure, which involves surrounding things with a border or barrier, and Envelopment, which involves covering them up entirely.) Today I’ll offer a tenth: Containment. Check out this wonderful video, shared with me by Alexa Johnson, of her daughter picking up blocks and placing them systematically into a metal mixing bowl. As its name implies, containment involves putting things into (and taking them back out of) other things. It’s commonly seen beginning around 9 months, is preceded by reaching and grasping, and - in researcher speak - is associated with a growing knowledge of the “affordances” (or potential uses) of different objects. (e.g. That bowls, for example, can be used to hold things.) The containment schema - which is helping your child develop spatial reasoning - has its distinct pros and cons for parents. On one hand, it’s a contributor to cleaning up! On the other - if you don’t keep a watchful eye - it could also be why you find your car keys inside a sorting toy (or, heaven forbid, the toilet 🤣) Speaking of the different affordances of objects, BTW, Mom reports that just moments before this video was shot, this bowl was being used for a very different purpose: experimenting with the noise it makes when beaten with a spoon!
