Let’s take it back to 1994. 🎤🎧 Digable Planets released “9th Wonder (Blackitolism),” featuring legendary DJ Jazzy Joyce, on their sophomore album, Blowout Comb. The record is layered with Hip Hop history, pulling from James Brown, Fred Wesley & The J.B.’s, the Ohio

Players, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Boogie Down Productions, and Sweet Tee & Jazzy Joyce.

One of the coolest connections is Jazzy Joyce herself. Digable Planets sampled “It’s My Beat,” her 1986 collaboration with Sweet Tee, and then brought Joyce onto “9th Wonder,”

connecting her earlier work directly to the new record.

Even the title “Blackitolism” reflects the Afrocentric themes and Black consciousness woven throughout Blowout Comb, an album that pushed Digable Planets beyond the sound that first introduced them to the mainstream.

“9th Wonder” wasn’t just a record. It was Hip Hop history being sampled, referenced, and rebuilt in real time. 🔥 #TheHipHopMuseum

🚨 DJ AKADEMIKS REACTS TO HEADLINES CLAIMING HIP-HOP IS “DOWN 30%” 📉🎤 DJ Akademiks is pushing back on the recent headlines suggesting that Hip-Hop & R&B are experiencing a major decline, arguing that the headlines leave out important context. 🧐 AKADEMIKS ARGUMENT: 🦂 Headlines make it sound like Hip-Hop has fallen off a cliff. 🦂 But according to the data he referenced, Hip-Hop/R&B still represents roughly one-third of streaming activity. 🦂 His biggest point: Hip-Hop reportedly went from being #1 to still being #1. 📊 🦂 Akademiks compared it to an NBA scoring champion averaging 40 points one season and 33 the next the production may be down, but if he’s still leading the league, calling him a “fall-off” can be misleading. 📉 SO WHAT ACTUALLY CHANGED? Akademiks argues that Hip-Hop’s market share has declined partly because artists simply aren’t releasing as much music as they were several years ago. Meanwhile, genres like Latin, Country, Pop, Dance & Electronic have continued growing and taking more of the overall market. 🎯 AKADEMIKS BIGGER POINT: He believes headlines saying “Hip-Hop is declining” can create a perception that the culture is dying potentially discouraging artists, labels, A&Rs and investors from putting more resources into Hip-Hop. And when fans aren’t getting enough new Hip-Hop music, they’ll naturally explore other genres. 🔥 THE DRAKE FACTOR Akademiks also pointed to Drake’s continued streaming dominance, arguing that Drake remaining one of the biggest streaming artists in the world challenges the idea that Hip-Hop itself has lost its audience. His conclusion: Hip-Hop may have lost market share but that doesn’t automatically mean Hip-Hop has “fallen off.” The bigger question is whether the decline is actually about demand, or simply about how much music artists are releasing. 👀 Do y’all think the “Hip-Hop is dying” headlines are misleading, or is the culture genuinely losing ground?
