The Incredible Machine was created by Kevin Ryan and published by Sierra in 1993. Not what anyone would have expected from Sierra at the time, since they were so heavily invested (and dominant) in the adventure game genre. But it was a smart move, because this game really was, well... incredible. You are presented with an area containing some fixed objects already in place, plus a limited inventory of parts (ropes, pulleys, bowling balls, balloons, gears, candles, mice, cats, fans, guns, blimps, and many more). Your job is to place, rotate, and connect these parts so they interact in a precise sequence of events to complete the level. There is no order or fixed way, you decide how and where. The goal could be as simple as "pop the balloon" or "put the ball in the basket" - but there were countless ways to do it. Rarely has a game made you think so much, often outside the box, yet never feel like a chore. It was pure fun and joy to figure out, and the multiple solutions made it even better, and also increasing replay value. Some games from the 80s and 90s really tested your brain. Not just mindless shooting or running, but connecting the dots, understanding abstract principles, and learning while playing. The Oregon Trail was one, as was Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?, and this one certainly belongs in that group too. A rare gem, loved it.

This car was cut off by this red car which entered a roundabout and was getting in the highway. When he honked, the red car slammed on its’ brakes and in his opinion, it made him have to jump the curb/median to avoid running into the the back of the red car. The red car speeds away and the driver who has his girlfriend and his dogs in the car decides to follow him. He calls the police and tells them he is following the red car. He has his license plate number by this time. A couple of times he speeds up next to the red car and yells that the police are coming. Is this what you would do? Who was the real road rager here? Many people said the driver with the dash cam is to blame or at the least just as much to blame. What do you think? Would you have followed the red car like this with your girlfriend and dogs in the car? Do you think both of them were road ragers? Or do you think the dash cam car was justified in following like he did?

Regardless of the genre, my favorite games are those that are easy to learn but hard to master. In other words, it takes you 2 minutes to understand the objective but the skill ceiling is quite high. An absolutely timeless gem is Sokoban (published in 1982), a game that fascinates me to this day. The graphics and sounds are sub-par at best, but gameplay is HIGHLY addictive. The idea is to move boxes/crates around in order to get them to their final destination without blocking the way for the "Sokoban" (Japanese word for storage worker/manager) or other boxes. Sounds super simple in theory but requires a lot of abstract thinking and planning ahead, especially in the later stages when the levels become more complex, when you can easily created deadlocks. You can only push the crates, you can't pull them, so one wrong move could spell disaster... Sokoban was developed in a solo effort by Hiroyuki Imabayashi and it exists for pretty much every system today, including endless cloness. You could call it the godfather of puzzle games.

Full interview: Bret Weinstein: Are you an anti-vaxxer? Were you always one, if you are one now? And if not, how did you become one? Forrest Maready: Yeah, I can, you're not offending me, I can answer that question easily. I'm afraid of offending you with the answer. But given that we're both adults here and separated by 1000s of miles, I'll go ahead and tell you the truth. Bret Weinstein: You'd be safe. Even if you were sitting in that same room, I promise. Forrest Maready: It's like they say, never criticize a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes. That way, you're a mile away. And also you have his shoes. I started with a complete belief that vaccines were the most important medical discovery of all time, more than antibiotics, more than surgery, the two others you mentioned. I was as convinced as anyone was. I slowly made the descent into madness, to where you now find me. The journey, I'll sum it up in 60 seconds. The journey was: well, maybe the polio vaccine actually wasn't as necessary as we thought, maybe we could have solved a problem with doing away with rampant pesticide use. I then made the jump to what I call a "first world anti-Vaxxer", which is: well, we need vaccines in the third world, they don't have the medical care and nutrition that we might have here. So sure, maybe a couple of hippies in California can afford to skip it. But if everyone skipped it, and then especially in the third world, no, you know, we have to do that, we will lose herd immunity. Forrest Maready: Yeah, I can, you're not offending me, I can answer that question easily. I'm afraid of offending you with the answer. But given that we're both adults here and separated by 1000s of miles, I'll go ahead and tell you the truth. Bret Weinstein: You'd be safe. Even if you were sitting in that same room, I promise. I started with a complete belief that vaccines were the most important medical discovery of all time, more than antibiotics, more than surgery, the two others you mentioned. I was as convinced as anyone was. I slowly made the descent into madness, to where you now find me. The journey, I'll sum it up in 60 seconds. The journey was: well, maybe the polio vaccine actually wasn't as necessary as we thought, maybe we could have solved a problem with doing away with rampant pesticide use. I got to: well, actually, the polio vaccine was completely unnecessary, but the others are necessary. The others, these diseases were horrible. Through additional research understanding that the measles infection was an innocuous infection that no one ever died from, with proper levels of nutrition, Vitamin A in particular. I started to think well, why was the measles vaccine invented? No one was dying of it, in the United States. It wasn't a rampant terrible disease. Why did they do it? Well, it was because they could. It was because they thought they could eradicate the disease with a vaccine. And if you study measles, you will understand it started with the promise of eradication, you know, everyone gets the vaccine within two or three years, it'll be eradicated. And, and on and on it goes, till the point it's not eradicated. So I transitioned into the: well, maybe there are some vaccines that are useful and others that really you don't need. I then made the jump to what I call a "first world anti-Vaxxer", which is: well, we need vaccines in the third world, they don't have the medical care and nutrition that we might have here. So sure, maybe a couple of hippies in California can afford to skip it. But if everyone skipped it, and then especially in the third world, no, you know, we have to do that, we will lose herd immunity. I've been thinking about games that feel truly ageless - ones that are essentially as enjoyable and satisfying today as they were when they first released. You can go back to classics like Pong, Space Invaders, or Pac-Man, but it’s hard to deny that you can see (and feel) their age now. They’re still fun, but time hasn’t passed them by unnoticed. I would argue that Tetris is the most ageless game ever made. It never relied on flashy graphics or impressive sound; its strength lies in one of the simplest and most brilliant concepts in gaming history. I'm confident it will still be played in 100 years - and that it will have exactly the same addictive appeal then as it does now. Can you think of any other games that fit this pretty rare category?

This team was down by 7 runs in the last inning. They made a comeback and scored the winning run by this young man stealing home. 👏 This is why as a catcher, you never throw the ball back to the pitcher from your knees with runners on base. You always stand and take a look at the runner, ESPECIALLY with a runner on third and in this scenario, the game winning run. That’s poor coaching imho. It’s the little fundamentals that are coached in practice that add up to whether a team is prepared or not for the games. Where was the coach telling his catcher to keep an eye on the runner at third?
