Chris Bryant today all but admitted why the government refuses to accept legislation that makes AI companies reveal their training data: They are going to offer creators transparency legislation *later*, in return for upending copyright law & letting AI companies train on people's life's work without permission. His justification for rejecting transparency legislation: "If we're going to get to that proper compromise solution [between creators and AI companies], it's going to require all the bits of the jigsaw to be put together into a comprehensive picture." That is: if creators want to know when AI companies are using their work, they're going to have to give up their rights. There is no other way of interpreting this comment I can think of. He is saying creators can't get transparency from AI companies without giving something up. And there is nothing to give up except their current rights under the law, which compel AI companies to ask their permission before using their work. Bryant & co. have given no other reason to reject transparency legislation. AI companies are breaking the law, and government refuses to hold them to account. IMO this is awful treatment of the creative sector by the government. Commercial generative AI training on copyrighted work without a license is illegal in the UK; creators cannot enforce their rights, because training happens behind closed doors; the government won't empower creators to enforce their rights without requiring them to give up other rights. Bookmark this. I hope I'm wrong, and that this is not the government's plan - but I see no other conclusion you can draw from Chris Bryant's words here.

This is my 5-minute testimony before the US Congress! Open science and open source AI distribute economic gains by enabling hundreds of thousands of small companies and startups to build with AI. It fosters innovation, and fair competition between all. Thanks to ethical openness, it creates a safer path for development of artificial intelligence by giving civil society, non-profits, academia, and policy makers the capabilities they need to counterbalance the power of big private companies. Open science and open source AI prevent blackbox systems, make companies more accountable, and help solving today’s challenges like mitigating biases, reducing misinformation, promoting copyright, & rewarding all stake-holders including artists & content creators in the value creation process. Baroness Kidron may have saved the UK's creative industries with her speech in the House of Lords today. She managed to get the House of Lords to approve her amendments to the Data (Use and Access) Bill, which among other things requires overseas gen AI companies to respect UK copyright law if they sell their products in the UK. (As a reminder, it is illegal to train commercial gen AI models on ©️ work without a licence in the UK.) What's astonishing is that her amendments passed despite The Labour Party reportedly being whipped to vote against them, and the Conservatives largely abstaining. Essentially, Labour voted against the amendments, and *everyone else who voted* voted to protect copyright holders. This should give you some sense of the strength of feeling over the government's plans to upend copyright law to favour AI companies. The bill still has to go through the Commons. But, as it stands, it would require generative AI companies selling their products in the UK to license any copyrighted training data they use. When asked the simple question of whether AI companies will be required to license copyrighted work they want to train on in the UK (as they are required to do at the moment!), this government minister says: "Our priority is to ensure that the UK is ready for AI-related risks while supporting responsible innovation and long-term growth." If you are planning on maintaining robust copyright laws that protect creators, this is not the answer you give. This is the answer you give if you're preparing to try to justify upending the law and throwing creatives under the bus. Creatives in the UK gearing up for a big fight, I think.

This is the video AI Haters tried to cancel, created by Martin Nebelong, who has just given me permission to republish it. He felt compelled to remove it due to the incredible amount of bullying he was receiving. In his words: "The amount of hate, negativity, and fear was staggering, and I didn't want to defend myself against that." Nothing outrages me more me more than the "cancel culture" and the unfair pressures on creators who are simply using AI tools and showing the world how they can learn these new creative processes. His video is amazing. It shows how Generative AI nowadays is much more than "just writing a prompt". And how it will enable artists and designers to experiment in countless new ways. Remember that it's not that artists/designers hate AI! AI Haters are just a small group of people and they don't speak for all artists. In fact, I know many more artists and designers who already use it daily. But they just don't make noise: they focus on learning and creating. Martin, you, and any other creator using AI, has all my support!

For generative AI to become an interesting art tool, we need much more control over the output. The slot-machine-like nature of pure text-to-image leaves too much to chance. Using the "Real-time Latent Consistency Model" that I'm using in the example here, is the first time I truly got a glimpse of a future where we'll be able to use our artistic skills and sensibility, to get control over AI image gen. Systems like these will never be able to match the quality or originality of a skilled artist, it won't surprise us in the same way an artist can. Things are a mess in terms of the training data these models are based on, and the questions about copyright concerns and about a time when everything will look the same are very valid. At some point capabilities like these will be embedded in photoshop, and anyone will be able to generate a pretty picture. But to create interesting designs, to tell original stories and to surprise us, we need creatives and artists with something on their mind. We'll be able to create immersive worlds, by making brush-strokes and sculpt marks, without needing to worry about all the dials, plugins, wires of our 3d and 2d tools today. I love to sculpt, I love to draw, and I love to explore new mediums and new ways to create. The Gen AI tools we have today are far from perfect, and things need to be steered in a better direction. For that we need artists to help point the way. Gen AI isn't going away.. it's too powerful and has the potential to allow us to tell stories like never before. Like all other big technological shifts, tech like this will come at a cost, but it will also open up new opportunities and empower a new generation of storytellers. I might be naive, but I believe that human ingenuity and creativity will persevere in this new world ♥️ #art #ai

Generative AI is a Psy-op to Keep the Poor Dumb The growing mass reliance on Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not accidental. It is a deliberate effort driven by a few wealthy Silicon Valley capitalists to commoditise “intelligence” and convince people to adopt it in exchange for their real-life problem-solving abilities, critical thinking and cultural authenticity. The ultimate goal as always, is to enrich this already super-wealthy tech elite at the expense of everyone else. Tellingly, while these billionaire tech oligarchs spend billions to convince consumers to adopt and become dependent on “AI” solutions, they are also doubling down on the primacy of human intelligence in their elite bubbles. This was illustrated by luxury car brand Porsche, which recently released an advert whose messaging conspicuously signalled that it used exclusively human-created content. This is a clear sign of a sharp divide between the wealthy and everyday people on the question of AI adoption. While the working classes are heavily influenced to buy into the idea that generative AI platforms like ChatGPT, Suno, and VEO-3 represent the future of work, research, and art, luxury brands meant for the elite are concurrently reassuring their market that human craftsmanship, critical thinking, and genuine creativity remains central to their vision. “AI for thee, not for me” appears to be the message. Across Africa, multiple Western state and NGO actors are pushing for this so-called “AI revolution” to take a central place in African educational systems. Even in some parts of the continent where basic access to electricity remains a challenge, governments are being feverishly lobbied to adopt “AI strategies” for their under-resourced educational systems. At the very same time, it has been reported that Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and other Silicon Valley billionaires who are pushing AI adoption, not only enroll their children in Montessori schools but also restrict their exposure and access to the very same technology that their lobbyists are trying to push into African classrooms. The obvious danger in opening African education systems up to the so-called “AI Revolution” is that the next generation of Africans could end up devoid of the exact reading, writing, critical reasoning and creative skills that Africa needs to fully take its place in the world - instead trained from an early age to be reliant on ChatGPT, Grok, Suno, Nano Banana, and VEO-3 to do their thinking and expression for them. At a time when high-level human thinking is needed more than ever on the continent, it is no accident that Western lobbyists are heavily pushing the normalisation of generative AI as a core pillar of African education. If Africa is to be maintained as a colonial resource plantation and a market for excess overseas production, young Africans must be made to read, write and think less, and consume more. In Africa and elsewhere, the constant global dynamic is that the poor and underprivileged are encouraged to outsource their intellectual processes to AI in order to “stay competitive," while the wealthy quietly protect the disciplines that actually sharpen the mind: reading, writing, artistry, and critical thinking. Africans must see the “AI Revolution” for what it is. Far from just benign or neutral technological advancement, it is yet another manifestation of power consolidation by Western racial-capitalists. This class of people understands very well that literacy, philosophy, and art produce power, while delegation of thought only produces ignorance and compliance. Despite whatever message they put out, the reality remains that thinking for yourself will in fact, never be “disrupted.”

This is despite creatives' huge protests, and despite previous proposals being roundly rejected by the public. There are rumours it is considering introducing a 'commercial research exception' for AI training. This would be disastrous. It would mean handing the life's work of British creatives to AI companies for free, to train their models on. In the House of Lords today, a government minister refused to rule this out. To be clear, this would amount to legalising theft. It would fly in the face of public opinion on what is fair, and would mean a surrender of British creatives' work by this Labour government. It would mean the lobbying by big US tech firms had succeeded, and the protests of the UK's creatives had been ignored. People's work is not the government's to give away.
