Chris Bryant today all but admitted why the government refuses to accept legislation that makes AI companies reveal their training data: They are going to offer creators transparency legislation *later*, in return for upending copyright law & letting AI companies train on people's life's work without permission. His justification for rejecting transparency legislation: "If we're going to get to that proper compromise solution [between creators and AI companies], it's going to require all the bits of the jigsaw to be put together into a comprehensive picture." That is: if creators want to know when AI companies are using their work, they're going to have to give up their rights. There is no other way of interpreting this comment I can think of. He is saying creators can't get transparency from AI companies without giving something up. And there is nothing to give up except their current rights under the law, which compel AI companies to ask their permission before using their work. Bryant & co. have given no other reason to reject transparency legislation. AI companies are breaking the law, and government refuses to hold them to account. IMO this is awful treatment of the creative sector by the government. Commercial generative AI training on copyrighted work without a license is illegal in the UK; creators cannot enforce their rights, because training happens behind closed doors; the government won't empower creators to enforce their rights without requiring them to give up other rights. Bookmark this. I hope I'm wrong, and that this is not the government's plan - but I see no other conclusion you can draw from Chris Bryant's words here.

For generative AI to become an interesting art tool, we need much more control over the output. The slot-machine-like nature of pure text-to-image leaves too much to chance. Using the "Real-time Latent Consistency Model" that I'm using in the example here, is the first time I truly got a glimpse of a future where we'll be able to use our artistic skills and sensibility, to get control over AI image gen. Systems like these will never be able to match the quality or originality of a skilled artist, it won't surprise us in the same way an artist can. Things are a mess in terms of the training data these models are based on, and the questions about copyright concerns and about a time when everything will look the same are very valid. At some point capabilities like these will be embedded in photoshop, and anyone will be able to generate a pretty picture. But to create interesting designs, to tell original stories and to surprise us, we need creatives and artists with something on their mind. We'll be able to create immersive worlds, by making brush-strokes and sculpt marks, without needing to worry about all the dials, plugins, wires of our 3d and 2d tools today. I love to sculpt, I love to draw, and I love to explore new mediums and new ways to create. The Gen AI tools we have today are far from perfect, and things need to be steered in a better direction. For that we need artists to help point the way. Gen AI isn't going away.. it's too powerful and has the potential to allow us to tell stories like never before. Like all other big technological shifts, tech like this will come at a cost, but it will also open up new opportunities and empower a new generation of storytellers. I might be naive, but I believe that human ingenuity and creativity will persevere in this new world ♥️ #art #ai

Generative AI is a Psy-op to Keep the Poor Dumb The growing mass reliance on Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not accidental. It is a deliberate effort driven by a few wealthy Silicon Valley capitalists to commoditise “intelligence” and convince people to adopt it in exchange for their real-life problem-solving abilities, critical thinking and cultural authenticity. The ultimate goal as always, is to enrich this already super-wealthy tech elite at the expense of everyone else. Tellingly, while these billionaire tech oligarchs spend billions to convince consumers to adopt and become dependent on “AI” solutions, they are also doubling down on the primacy of human intelligence in their elite bubbles. This was illustrated by luxury car brand Porsche, which recently released an advert whose messaging conspicuously signalled that it used exclusively human-created content. This is a clear sign of a sharp divide between the wealthy and everyday people on the question of AI adoption. While the working classes are heavily influenced to buy into the idea that generative AI platforms like ChatGPT, Suno, and VEO-3 represent the future of work, research, and art, luxury brands meant for the elite are concurrently reassuring their market that human craftsmanship, critical thinking, and genuine creativity remains central to their vision. “AI for thee, not for me” appears to be the message. Across Africa, multiple Western state and NGO actors are pushing for this so-called “AI revolution” to take a central place in African educational systems. Even in some parts of the continent where basic access to electricity remains a challenge, governments are being feverishly lobbied to adopt “AI strategies” for their under-resourced educational systems. At the very same time, it has been reported that Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and other Silicon Valley billionaires who are pushing AI adoption, not only enroll their children in Montessori schools but also restrict their exposure and access to the very same technology that their lobbyists are trying to push into African classrooms. The obvious danger in opening African education systems up to the so-called “AI Revolution” is that the next generation of Africans could end up devoid of the exact reading, writing, critical reasoning and creative skills that Africa needs to fully take its place in the world - instead trained from an early age to be reliant on ChatGPT, Grok, Suno, Nano Banana, and VEO-3 to do their thinking and expression for them. At a time when high-level human thinking is needed more than ever on the continent, it is no accident that Western lobbyists are heavily pushing the normalisation of generative AI as a core pillar of African education. If Africa is to be maintained as a colonial resource plantation and a market for excess overseas production, young Africans must be made to read, write and think less, and consume more. In Africa and elsewhere, the constant global dynamic is that the poor and underprivileged are encouraged to outsource their intellectual processes to AI in order to “stay competitive," while the wealthy quietly protect the disciplines that actually sharpen the mind: reading, writing, artistry, and critical thinking. Africans must see the “AI Revolution” for what it is. Far from just benign or neutral technological advancement, it is yet another manifestation of power consolidation by Western racial-capitalists. This class of people understands very well that literacy, philosophy, and art produce power, while delegation of thought only produces ignorance and compliance. Despite whatever message they put out, the reality remains that thinking for yourself will in fact, never be “disrupted.”

This week, we have had a lot of discussions around artificial intelligence, inspired by the Global AI Summit in Kigali, Rwanda. Many African countries are doing great things to motivate young people to take advantage of AI because it represents the future in problem solving. Unfortunately, Zimbabwe’s ICT Minister Tatenda Mavetera and her permanent secretary did not attend, showing how these things are not taken seriously by our government. Zimbabwe’s richest man, Strive Masiyiwa, who has not been to Zimbabwe for decades, made it clear at the summit, which he co-chaired, that investment will not go where the environment is not conducive. Our government talks about anything topical without delivering anything meaningful—they are doing the same with AI. The majority of schools have no computers. Zimbabweans receive electricity for only four hours a day. As the Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Claver Gatete, explains, a country needs electricity for AI data centres to work. Yet only 600 million out of 1.5 billion people in Africa have access to electricity, not even energy. Yet energy is an integral part of AI development. Energy is an essential component for the successful development and implementation of AI in a country because AI systems require massive amounts of data to function effectively. This data must be stored and processed in data centres and servers, which depend on electricity to power both the hardware and the cooling systems. You cannot achieve this in a country that delivers only four hours of electricity a day to its citizens like Zimbabwe. AI applications require continuous and uninterrupted access to data and computing resources to deliver accurate and timely results. Electricity is also crucial for powering research institutions, universities, and Research and Development centres that drive AI advancement. Without reliable access to electricity, these institutions will struggle to conduct research, develop new algorithms, or train AI models. The tragedy of Zimbabwe is that the Vice-President of Google responsible for AI, Dr James Manyika, is Zimbabwean; one of the key presenters at the summit, Prof Arthur Mutambara, who has just released a book on AI, is Zimbabwean; Strive Masiyiwa, who has partnered with Nvidia to bring supercomputer technology to the continent by building Africa’s first artificial intelligence factory in South Africa with data centres in Kenya and Egypt, is Zimbabwean. Yet, none of them are working in or with Zimbabwe. Our political leaders have let us down on all these fronts, yet they keep yapping about AI when there is nothing on the ground! Instead of slogans and dancing at rallies, they should see how other countries are doing it. A country that doesn’t focus on technology for development will be a dusty village in 25 years, and its people will not be able to compete at all, rendering it just a dot on the global map. Too much political yada yada without anything delivered, and with people like Tatenda Mavetera, who forge qualifications, in the driving seat, Zimbabwe’s fortunes will continue to dwindle! Add to that the historic looting of public funds meant for building power plants to give us electricity, future generations will curse on our graves!

DeepSeek-R1 shattered the assumption that performant AI models must be built closed source with loss-leading computational costs. This is the reality that Web3 x Crypto firms have been waiting for, leading me to believe that the most performant AI models in the future will be built on-chain. Resource Requirements DeepSeek R1 (671 billion parameters), which took over a billion dollars, 2,000 Nvidia H800 GPUs, and over 55 days, beat benchmarks held by OpenAI’s o1 mode (near 2 trillion parameters)l, which required hundreds of billions of dollars to develop along with over 16,000 advanced GPUs. The idea that AI models must be closed-source and have loss-leading computational costs to succeed is crumbling. The Existing Decentralized AI Narrative AI x Crypto projects believed that crowdsourced, public, decentralized AI would eventually create better models than their centralized counterparts. This had thus far not been true, as the highest-performing models had come from closed-source companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Crypto x AI companies have adapted to this by specializing in infrastructure rather than model-building. For example, GPU marketplaces like , The Render Network, io.net, and Exabits have developed sustainable revenues. Companies that allow users to share their network bandwidth like touch grass and Gradient have found their niche in supplying services, like distributed web scraping, to web2 clients. Storage networks like Arweave Ecosystem, Filecoin, and Ocean Protocol have also done well by being the platform on which these projects are built. Supply networks have flourished because of their ability to tailor their cheaper and more scalable services to off-chain customers. Renewed Focus Now that GPU and financial resources are no longer limitations to creating quality AI models, web3 AI companies can focus on replicating DeepSeek’s effectiveness while offering new benefits like modality, user ownership, censorship resistance, privacy, and more. Pantera Capital has funded companies in this space like and Sentient that believe they can match or exceed the performance of traditional AI companies while offering additional services or benefits. , for example, is building a platform where anyone can monetize AI models, data sets, and applications in a collaborative space. Users can permissionlessly train models manually, provide training data, and create tailored AI models with no-code tools. They are only able to cater to all these stakeholders (AI developers, users, resource providers) because everything is tied to their native Sahara blockchain. We invested in them precisely for this reason. The Future of AI will be built with Web3 Infrastructure I believe that supply-side projects will continue to grow, while consumer-facing projects can begin competing with web2 competitors by taking advantage of their ability to build networks that invite community involvement. and Sentient, for example, have begun setting up systems for users to train models based on the users’ expertise. These platforms will allow users to pick and choose the data and integrations to whatever they are applying the model towards. Sahara already has over 780,000 users on their waitlist while Sentient has over 1 million interactions. In the near future, I believe that the most performant AI models will be built on-chain.
