She may have killed the children out of misguided love. But does that mean that she didn’t know what she was doing was illegal, or that she couldn’t stop herself from doing illegal things? IMHO, altruistic filicide doesn’t prove she was unable to know killing the kids was illegal, or that she couldn’t stop herself from doing it. Moreover, altruistic filicide completely undermines Clancy’s command hallucination claim. If she had no control over her actions, then how could the actions be as a result of her altruism?

Paula said Lindsay was a loving, caring mother, & always wanted to be a mother; “I felt it was the best thing that ever happened to her - she would do anything for her children. She was just such a loving mother”. Paula says some time around October of 2022, she noticed a change in Lindsay; “I noticed she had become very anxious. She told me she was anxious about going back to work because Callan was having trouble taking a bottle, she didn't feel right leaving him”. Lindsay sent her mum this text message; “Mom, will you please come up and stay with me for a bit. I'm really sick. Something is wrong. I have horrible insomnia all night and I just don't know how I'm going to get through the day. I started taking the medicine my doctor prescribed for anxiety and I think it’s made things worse. It's just really scary, and I don't want to be alone”. That same day, Paula said she came up to the Clancy home in Duxbury & stayed for about a week. Through November & into December, Paula said Lindsay's condition was not getting any better. She said one particular evening that was disturbing to her was when Lindsay said she was afraid to be alone and asked to sleep with her, which she did. In December, with Patrick also present, Paula said she remembered Lindsay being very nervous & saying she had something she needed to tell them. Paula said; “She told us she had thoughts of harming the children”.

When the prosecution rested its case on Monday, Clancy's mother, Paula Musgrove, was called to testify for the defense. She recalled a conversation that Clancy had in December 2022, a few weeks before the killings, with her and Clancy's husband at the time, Patrick Clancy.
