"As you are aware that in 2022, GEO Pomona Waste Management signed a concession agreement, a 30-year concession agreement with City of Harare for waste management. So, we are talking about a range of waste that is going to be separated. It's a project component with various infrastructures are going to be we started with the encapsulation,landfills ,water treatment plant and sorting plant. Now, this is the last leg of waste management, this waste handling plant. It's going to produce 16 to 22 megawatts of electricity, and it will be fed to the national grid.The work is going to commence this month. It's going to take 18 months. The final position we are going to produce electricity to fed the national grid.This is a Chinese contractor. What I can say is this is the first project in Zimbabwe and in Southern Africa. Comm. says the State Government will continue to pay special attention to waste conversion The quest to make good use of the high solid waste generated in Lagos State got another boost on Tuesday as the state expressed readiness to partner with some Sweden organizations on how to turn both solid waste and liquid waste to energy across the metropolis. Speaking during the meeting at Alausa, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab said the state will continue to pay special attention to waste management adding that waste is not a waste but remain one of the best resource every where. He said Waste to energy is a project that the State Government is willing to embark on in order to move the narrative forward in a progressive and productive way. "Our resolve from the beginning of this tenure is that whatever we have to engage in to manage and deploy our solid and liquid waste as a resource is a priority for this government as it will save Lagos but other neighbouring state" he said. The Commissioner stated that the Ministry which is a public facing ministry has resolved to embrace any project that will cut the carbon foot print in the state. He said the state being a coastal state is faces alot of challenges, one of which is the Atlantic Ocean rising at the peak of the rainy season adding that the state is also at the end of numerous tributaries where water is discharged into the lagoon all of which could lead to flooding in the state. He said lagos generates between 13,000 to 14,000 tonnes of waste per day and the state is open to suggestions about possible productive ways to turn it into a Resources and move the state forward. Wahab said lagos as a State is working to decongest the roads and make Lagos a 21st century mega city saying that the cause and effect on the environment is that these moves help to reduce the emissions on the long run. According to him, As a result of current energy crisis in Nigeria, this has caused the spike in the cost of PMS and its multiple effects on the economy. So if the Lagos State Government can go ahead with this project. it will solve half of the problem in the PMS high price in Lagos. "This project is something we have to pursue deliberately and diligently. This is because while the government on its own part is trying to push out CNG at lower cost, conversion of waste to energy will also be an option especially for public transport in Lagos" Wahab said Lagos account for over 50% of the vehicular traffic in the country with the smallest land mass as well as 22million people which is 10% of the country’s population being inhabited in with less than 3,600 square kilometers of land, stressing that the project is not an option but a necessity. He recalled that earlier in the year, the state government had been in consultation with two Dutch companies one which will turn waste to energy and the other which will deal with electronic waste, adding that the state can indeed change the notion that waste is not a waste but a resource. 1930 is the number you need to call. The reason is simple. They are the ones responsible for tracking and freezing money moving in and out of the system. Calling a bank employee is a waste of time because that employee only has access to your own bank account. Once the money is deducted, it can be transferred to any number of other banks. China used to worry about having too much garbage to process. Now some waste-to-energy plants are facing the opposite problem: not enough garbage. Previously sealed landfills may even have to be reopened, not because China failed, but because waste has become fuel, feedstock, data, and part of an industrial recycling loop. This is what China does best. It takes the ugliest, dirtiest, most ignored corner of urban life — garbage — and turns it into engineering, automation, energy recovery, environmental governance, and industrial optimization. Today marks another pivotal moment in our journey to transform waste management in Lagos. I had the honour of facilitating the signing of a landmark agreement between the Lagos State Government and ZoomLion Nigeria, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group. For decades, the Olusosun dumpsite has stood as a symbol of the burden of uncontrolled urban waste. Through this new agreement, we are on the cusp of a major breakthrough. A state-of-the-art Transfer Loading Station will be constructed at Olusosun, serving as a central hub to redirect 2,500 tonnes of daily waste to a newly planned Material Recovery Facility in Ikorodu. This will allow us to permanently close Olusosun - a move that not only improves public health and safety but also significantly reduces the environmental impact of open dumping. In Igando, the Solous III dumpsite will also witness a major shift. With a new recovery facility planned for Badagry, we’ll be relocating 1,500 tonnes of waste daily; showing our commitment to decentralising and modernising waste handling in Lagos. What excites me most is the impact this will have beyond cleaner streets. Over 5,000 jobs, both direct and indirect will be created through this project. From waste processing technicians to logistics and facility maintenance staff, we are opening up a whole new ecosystem around waste recovery and circular economy opportunities. At the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, we’ve always believed that Lagos’ environmental future must be built on innovation, collaboration, and a firm resolve to act. Status update: having coffee on top of the cooling tower of a mega waste incineration plant in Chongqing. Literally. I'm at the Chongqing Sanfeng Yulin waste-to-energy incineration plant, one of the largest in China. When traveling abroad, some people like to visit museums or amusement parks, I'm more into garbage treatment facilities 😊 That's actually a pretty cool thing in China: you can visit many industrial facilities, they often have a small museum attached that tells you about the history of the place, and how it works. This particular facility is pretty impressive: it treats 3,000 tons of waste daily, which is the amount of the amount of waste produced by 3 million people. With this waste, it produces enough energy for 200,000 households. When you visit you can see the actual garbage dump pit, which looks insane, as well as the central control room (both on video).
