Denis Villeneuve on the two filmmakers who inspired him the most: "There’s two filmmakers that are massive sources of inspiration for me: Ingmar Bergman and Steven Spielberg, for different reasons. Ingmar was one of the big artistic shocks in my life. He has always been a massive influence on my work even if what I'm doing is very far away*. Spielberg because, from the beginning, I was inspired by his genius as a film director.” ("Denis Villeneuve Talks Influence Of Ingmar Bergman & Steven Spielberg, Admiration For Christopher Nolan", Kevin Jagernauth, The Playlist, 2017) * The second sentence about Bergman is not from the article mentioned. I saw this from a video interview a few years ago & saved it in my drafts. I don't remember the exact interview. P.S: Remembering one of the greatest Filmmakers of all time, Ingmar Bergman on his 108th birthday! Clip from: Autumn Sonata (1978) Director: Ingmar Bergman Actors: Ingrid Bergman, Liv Ullmann

#InMemoriam

i can’t believe the academy voters watched this autumn sonata (1978) scene and didn’t nominate liv ullmann? it gets even more insane because wdym ingrid bergman didn’t get another academy award for this performance.

Persona (1966, Bergman) "I don't think that a director should make easy films either for himself or for his audience. He should try to lead his audience a little farther with each succeeding film. It's good for the public to work a little." --- Ingmar Bergman

Cries & Whispers (1972, Bergman) “Ingmar Bergman has spent 10 years in clinics, you know. Between each film, Bergman lies down like a corpse—and then he makes a beautiful picture in which the woman is filled with anxiety.” --- Agnès Varda

On this day, 63 years ago, one of the greatest films of all time & my favourite Ingmar Bergman movie, "Winter Light" (1963) was released in Sweden. Here is a sad but interesting trivia about the making of the movie: Ingmar Bergman felt Gunnar Björnstrand was too happy to play the lead character in "Winter Light" (1963) & Bergman thought it didn't fit the character. So, Bergman asked his doctor friend to tell Gunnar Björnstrand that he was suffering from a serious disease. Gunnar was then put on medication & became depressed for real as Bergman would have intended. [Source: "Bergman: A Year in a Life (2018)"]

On this day, 19 years ago, we lost two of the greatest filmmakers of all time- Ingmar Bergman & Michelangelo Antonioni. Ingmar Bergman on Michelangelo Antonioni: "Antonioni has done two masterpieces, you don't have to bother with the rest. One is 'Blow-Up' (1966), which I've seen many times, & the other is 'La Notte' (1961), also a wonderful film, although that's mostly because of the young Jeanne Moreau." Michelangelo Antonioni on Ingmar Bergman: "Ingmar Bergman is a long way from me, but I admire him. He, too, concentrates a great deal on individuals; & although the individual is what interests him most, we are very far apart. His individuals are very different from mine-but he's a great director." Clips from: La Notte (1961) & Persona (1966)

"I don’t suppose there’s much more to say about 'Summer With Monika' (1953), except that it’s close to my heart and one of my films I’m always happy to see again." --- Ingmar Bergman Full Excerpt: "Technically, what was interesting about 'Summer With Monika' (1953)—besides being made by a little unit and a silent camera and dubbed—was that I’d lost my regular editor, Oscar Rosander, and was given another who was incompetent. Oscar Rosander had been magnificent. When you have a good editor you take it easy and let him help you. But now, suddenly, I was without one, and had to do my own editing. I was obliged to learn how to edit; why one made just this cut or that; changed shots at just this or that particular point. Instructive. I don’t suppose there’s much more to say about 'Summer With Monika' (1953), except that it’s close to my heart and one of my films I’m always happy to see again." Liv Ullmann on how she felt after reading the screenplay of Ingmar Bergman's 'Face to Face' (1976): "I realized when I first got the part that it was an extraordinary tour-de-force for an actress—if I could do it. But there were difficulties with it as well, besides being difficult to act. It’s not a lovable part. So I was at the same time afraid that even if I did it right, people wouldn’t like it. You don’t like to see your own close friend have these dreams; why would you like to see somebody you don’t even know? It’s not beautiful, it’s ugly. It’s everything inside us we don’t think about." (Liv Ullmann's interview with Virgina Wright Wexman, 1976) On this day, 50 years ago, 'Face to Face' (1976) was released in the USA.
